Any of you locals / residents going to see the game tomorrow night ?

US vs Costa Rica Wednesday Night - June 3

The US team, which generally dislikes playing games on artificial turf have been training for tomorrow nights game against Costa Rica at the Saprissa stadium, in a qualifying match in the CONCACAF. FIFA, the sport’s world governing body, only recently approved the use of artificial turf fields for international matches. “The fact that a number of our guys have been to Saprissa Stadium, who have played matches there, that will certainly be part of what we will discuss when we get the whole group together,” Bradley said. “Costa Rica has had great success at Saprissa Stadium. They are very comfortable there", Us coach Bob Bradley said.

Costa Rica currently sits second behind the U.S. with six points, and a win would propel them to the top. The United States have never won a qualifying game in Costa Rica (and given up three times as many goals as they've scored there, to boot) so history suggests that this is a game the Ticos can snag a full three points from. The Ticos have used the home artificial field to their advantage, beating both Honduras and El Salvador on it, and forcing the Americans to log a few days in Miami running up and down on fieldturf. Saprissa is also a notoriously difficult place to play, the crowd on top of the action and vocally involved. Keeping a cool head is difficult, even for experienced pros.

I wouldn't be sure which team I'd be rooting for, so I'll probably watch the game on TV. :? :? :?

I'm much more interested in going to the September 5th qualifying game between Costa Rica and Mexico. Mexico's team is universally hated down here, and it'll be easy to be a Fanatico Puro Tico. :D :D :D

Is anyone interested in getting a group together for the Costa Rica/Mexico game?

You're right Paco. I was quoting the (original) article in today's Inside Costa Rica. I just went back and checked, and they corrected the date. The game is on Wednesday Night, June 3. So does this mean you're going to it ?!?!?

My bad....

Down with the big bad USA. CR scored it's first goal with just 2 minutes gone in the World Cup qualifying game.11 minutes later "WE" scored again making it 2-0. In the second half CR scored again. Then the USA FINALLY got on the board with a penalty kick making the final score 3-1.

Yes, CR looked and played well vs a porous US defense.

HOWEVER, to me it was kind of ridiculous to watch a World Cup qualifier being played on artificial turf. Not to mention a very old and poor quality rug to boot.

Basically, CR schooled the USA in turf football, that's it! No wonder they have such an outstanding record vs the USA when playing at Estadio Saprissa.

Pura Vida

According to what I read before the match, the USA has never won a qualifier in CR. Apparently they don't play well on artificial turf. To which I say, "Excuses are for losers."

They got their ass*s handed to them. That being said, while CR may be "a good team", the USA is apparently is not. A good team would beat someone on a sandlot, if that is where the game is played.

I wouldn't put much stock in beating the USA, especially in CR. I seriously doubt that either will make much noise in the WC, if they qualify.

In many countries, if not most, the top athletes play soccer, it is about the only game in town. In the good old USA the road to millions is not with soccer, and our top athletes are not even close to playing futbol.

Congratulations to CR, maybe it will wake up some of the primadonna's on the USA squad.

Health & happiness to all.......

They have been saying for 15 years that with youth soccer being the #1 youth sport participated in that eventually the fan base for US soccer will be huge. It hasn't happened and never will. Scoring too low for the average fan to watch and wait.

I love watching the Ticos lazying around the TV on week day afternoons in a coastal town bar watching futbol. All the while we're sitting in cubicle prisons answering to the man from 9 to 5. And who says we're the rich ones :?:

PURA VIDA! yeah, it is a pretty pure life!

I thoroughly enjoy talking to the chicas and telling them how much soccer blows.

It pisses them off so bad when I completely discount soccer even being a sport

As of yesterday (before their dismal performance), FIFA had the US team ranked 14th and Costa Rica ranked 41. This is out of 202 national teams worldwide. The teams ranked above the US are the traditional powerhouses--Spain, Germany, Italy, Brazil, Argentina, Italy, to name a few.

Next rankings are published July 1st; and, given last night's performance, one would anticipate some changes.

The US had a much better goalkeeper with Casey Keller. He probably would blocked at least one or two of last night's goals.

I told my girl that. if we were in my hometown and she wanted to attend a pro-soccer game, I wouldn't even know which direction to drive or how many states I would have to cross before we found one. I told her that we have no niche available for soccer and we won't recruit good players because soccer pays nothing!

(Highly inflammatory statements to follow:) Besides, soccer is for poosies who don't have any talent at real games. And who would want to watch a bunch of guys who fall to the ground flailing around any time someone touches them. They need a ref with the sole job of telling these pansies to "get the phuck up, you ain't hurt!" A second flop should mean that the poos is on the bench on "injury time" for at least five minutes! (JMHO...but I hate soccer.)

Want soccer to catch on in the US? Mine the field!

The LA Galaxy recruited an A-list celebrity athlete and that hasn't worked out too well fro them nor the sport nor the league. Furthermore, the game here is not team or GM controlled, it is league controlled. There simply is just no US interest. World Cup coming soon, baby.......WoooHooooo

JUST NOTHING LIKE THE REAL GAME OF FOOTBALL!!!
