When my usual fishing buddy gave me glowing reports of his experience out of Quepos three weeks ago, my wingmen and I were psyched. But, what a difference a few short weeks make.
When we arrived at Quepos pier, I knew what it was going to be like when the charter broker met us and said "Ummmm...it's been kinda slow for the past couple of days."
From a group of 5 fishermen, only two fish were landed. I caught a 30+ lbs dorado and my buddy reeled in a decent-sized sailfish. Shortly before noon, we were rousted from our stupor when fisherman #3 wrestled with a 250 lbs striped marlin for 15 minutes until the 50 lb test line snapped.
Overall, we were very pleased with the 37' sportfisher, "Estrella del Mar", and her crew. No one can be faulted when the fish decide to head north prematurely.
Not all was lost, though, one half of my monster mahi - mahi was enough to feed my 7 wingmen last night. We presented one fillet to the Sportsmens Lodge culinary staff which did a superb job of preparing garlic, broiled and breaded mahi - mahi. Dinner was served "family style." After playing some pool and meeting a few lovelies, three of the group returned to our hotel with take-out "desserts."
