In June on a weekday, you might be able to get a boat to go out for a half day for 400, which you could split 3 ways to get into your budget. In peak season, on a weekend, I'd say no way. But during the offseason, you will probably be able to get a deal from a boat that's looking for business.

Sorry MONEY. The aws to your question if you want to hook up with a bill fish is NO. I will repost some contact info if I can find it in my notes about a guy in SJ who has some connections in Jaco, etc. But they will cost you $500.00 - $800.00 for a full day. Line up 2 -3 friends and split the cost. It's GREEN SEASON and there are deals to be had.

If you just want to go fishing and don't have your heart set on a billfish or a "fancy shmansy" boat go to Herradura Beach and make a deal with one of the locals in an open boat with an outboard motor.

Herradura is just past the entrance to Los Suenos near Jaco. There's a couple great restaurants right on the beach there too.

great advise Rocco. I pay between $20.00 - $25.00 Us per hour for boat and skipper. Open 14 16 foot boats with a 25 -25 HP Kicker. They supply the beer, h2o and tackel. I bring somy luer's too try out and have had a great time. I leave some of the lures for a PROPINA.

I have fished on some of the finest boats in Flamingo Bay
and I really prefer fishing on a ponga vs a big exspensive sportfisher that you just trowl around in. The large sportfishers do have there merit but for downright "fun" basic fishing you can't beat a Ponga.
( bring a hat & sunscreen )

Tiene cuidado with some of the "local fishermen"!! I have been going out about twice a year, from Golfito to Jaco(mostly Los Suenos), and about 4 years ago, I went out with a friend of a tico that runs a bar south of Tarcoles. It sounded too good to be true-$275 for 5 of us...and, of course, it was. Turns out the boat wasn't 30 feet, but 24- on it's maiden voyage with a tico rebuilt engine that had been sitting in another friend's backyard for two years. First thing that happens is that it is not at Los Suenos, but on Playa Herradura, right next door. A boat rolls in and a guy gets on an anchored canoe to come and get us on shore. They put the biggest guy and myself in the canoe with all the coolers, and when the canoe guy jumps onboard we all go over, with my friend losing his camera. Then, we were are only fishing behind the shrimp trawlers, along with the seagulls. Caught one spanish mackerel, while the engine died 4 times. On the way back the waves picked up to 5/6 feet and very close together, so every wave went over the boat. Thank god we took a large inventory of Centenario to overcome the fear and uncertainty.
Damn ,that was an expensive, shit tasting fish. I have since come to the conclusion to spend the $$ for a real fishing boat

If you go out of Los Suenos you are looking at about 800-900 for a full day. The money is well worth it. You can get away with much less but as other users have posted you will not get a real Sport Fishing Experience.

I have lived in Costa Rica for 10 years now and highly recommend you put some money together and Charter a quality boat out of los suenos.
http://www.topcostaricafishing.com has some great information that should help you out.
