Post subject:  getting out of san Jose

I am booked in my hotel in Escazu till Thurs then I am free with no plans till I leave on Sunday.

I want to get out of San Jose and do some horseback riding, exploring sunning, maybe a scubadive or so...

there is a HUGE amount of info on this board but I want to ask one more time.. where would YOU go, and where would YOU stay?

a place to find chicas is an added +

or am I better off getting a hotel in the Gulch and doing the day trip thing..

Never got my VIP card yesterday but will swing by today or tomorrow for sure.. Hope to meet some of you so we can talk and drink in person

Where would I go? Personally, I'd get out of SJ AND the Central Valley to see the country. Escazu is not an ideal base for sampling SJ nightlife, but it is certainly easy enough to at least get into town during the day to sample the MP's (or museums). At night, it is still possible to take a cab into town to visit the bars or nightclubs. Though convincing a chica to go back with you to Escazu will be more difficult (or come at a cost), you could always find some ST hotel closer to the Gulch. So, personally speaking, I'd do my chica thing while I was stuck in Escazu. I'm willing to bet other guys around here would have a much different view. Your question really should have been where should YOU go and not knowing you personally that is a little hard for the rest of us to answer. I can only infer from your chicas would be "an added +" comment that while chicas are a plus for you they aren't your number one priority and so am guessing what might be best for YOU may not be so different from what I'd choose to do.

Now, if you take what I'm betting would be most other guys' answers - "getting a hotel in the Gulch and doing the day trip thing" so you can stay in "a place to find chicas" at night - then the #1 answer to where I'd go for a day trip out of SJ would be white water rafting. Apart from being one of the most exciting things you can out of SJ, it has great repeat value for guys like me who have already done most everything else. Of course, once again, where would YOU go is a different question, particularly not knowing much about your tastes or physical condition.

Personally, horseback riding never had any huge appeal to me. With more than just an hour or two of that my butt becomes unbelievably sore. Maybe I just don't know how to do it right. But, in any event, THAT might be the best thing to do for YOU. There are many places to do that relatively close to SJ. I did some horseback riding on my 1st trip on the slopes of the Barva volcano just north of Heredia.

I also enjoy scuba diving, but the best places to go in CR would be a very long day trip from SJ. Even just going to the sewer that is known as Jaco (the closest beach area to SJ) is a good 2-2.5 hours from SJ. OTOH, they do have P4P nightlife in Jaco (which makes it an obvious favorite for many guys here), so you might want to visit that as an overnight trip (or more). Keep in mind that it is far from being the nicest beach area in CR, but it does have that P4P which more than makes up for that negative in the minds of many guys.

For a HUGE amount of info all in one post you might want to take a look at the day trip list that I put together in Prolijo's Day Trip List

As for where would I stay, my personal preference is the Castillo, but where you should stay would really be dictated by such factors as your budget, how close you want to be to the "action" (e.g. staying at the HDR, Morazon or Presidente vs. being a slightly longer cab ride away at the Castillo, SL, Amon, Freebird etc.) and not the least of which, since we're talking only 4 days from now, which place has a vacancy.

One last thought, if you want to get out of SJ for an overnight or more but you don't want to forego the chicas, then Jaco is not your only option. You might want to be shopping around over the next few days for a traveling companion who you can take with you to one of the areas which do not have sufficient P4P of their own, such as Arenal/Tabacon. Just be aware that there are many issues involved with going that route as well, so read up on it first. Even if you do not take a chica with you, the Arenal area would be an excellent place to go for a night or two, as would Manuel Antonio if you wanted to go to a nice beach area, or any number of other places around the country.

Brother Wildhare--Brother Prolijo's link to a day-trip/ overnight trip list is as complete as you'll find anywhere. A thorough checklist you'll come back to time and again on future trips. The only additions I would make are these:

Nights in Escazu/ San Pedro--If you like adult music in a nice setting the Jazz Cafe has 2 locations. It's not always jazz but it's always good;
www.jazzcafecostarica.com

San Jose music/ dancing--Yes, there's the Key Largo, but if big-band Latin music is your thing, go where "civilian" San Jose goes--El Tobogan dance hall. Dance floor as big as a football field and crowded always. Open on weekends only.
No website of their own but try this link for a review and details. Your hotel keeper is sure to know it.

In Jaco--There's a good ATV tour provider in AXR ATV Tours

www.axrjaco.com

Want to learn/brush-up your Latin dancing? Latin women love to dance and this puts you in a good place with them. This outfit offers 1/2 day Salsa dancing "Boot Camps". Bring your own Chica or, with notice, they'll provide a partner. NOTE: they also have instruction in Latin percussion.

for longer out-of-town trips--If you want to explore the upper Pacific coast by air, try an ultralight flight. Here's a provider with lodging, and a Link to a nifty 9-minute video, which mentions that and 2 other providers. BYOC for this. Looks like the most fun you can have with your clothes on:
