As part of my (first) trip to CR, I'm thinking of a few days in Puerto Viejo. I know its a bit far (4+ hours) from SJO and probably doesn't have much of a mongering scene, but some time relaxing away from the crowds sounds good to me. (Jaco seems to be a crowded place, unless I'm misguided on that.)

Has anybody from CRT been there and willing to share some info?
- Where to stay?
- How to get there (interbus or otherwise)?
- What to do (besides relax in a hammock)?

This area has among the best beaches in CR and draws lots of European tourists. It is also one of my favorite places in CR. Opportunities for women are very limited. It would be a good palce to bring sand to the beach if you happen to find a girl you really like in San Jose but a great place to kick back a relax if you have some time. There is also some good hiking along the trail down the beach in Cahuita and down the trail from Monzanilla with both locales through national parks. rbc100

On getting there you can take interbus or if in for a littele adventure and a little culture take to express bus at the Caribean bus teminal which runs several trips a day. It is about a 5 hour trip either way. rbc100

Does anyone know if you can fly there? If I'm lucky the schedule.

I don't believe there are any flights. Happily, the road trip isn't all that bad, I am told.

PV, Cahueta and Manzanillo will be part of my trip this year...maybe.

fantastic place, great restaraunts ( Pica de Negra) Italian place, real laid back, David is the owner, just let him feed you, no sense in ordering, never let me down.....afternoons at the "majic Buzz" decent boca's ping-pong beer and.........nice way to waste a few hours, beaches are awesome.......stayed at CaraBlue, nice place, no TV, phone etc.....clean and a short walk to the beach....I think 90 bucks a night, pretty good nightlife down "town", reggae crowd, lots of fun..... don't know about the action, bought my own chica.

Thanks for the feedback. I have three days booked there and I'll be using Interbus to get to PV. Looking forward to some days of relaxation and resting up from the previous days in SJO.

Went to Puerto Viejo myself. I stayed at Casa Camp Verde. Decent Cabinas. NO AC, but they had a great pool fridge in the room. NO AC appears to be quite common over there. I paid $42 a night, but they had rooms for as low as $20 but you had to share a bathroom at that price. I enjoyed my time there. I took the expedition tropicales river rafting tour from San Jose. They give you an option of being dropped back in San Jose or Puerto Viejo since that is the two locations they originate at. So I got free transport there. Coming back you have more time availability if you take the local bus 4K colones, which can be purchased next to the interbus booth. I took the interbus back since it was more convenient for me. You can also take shuttleme as well which costs a few dollars less. The thing to be aware of was that the interbus stopped midway for a break and a bunch of people started to eat and extended the trip back another 45 minutes. C'est la vie with the tourist transports I guess. As far as I can tell no action in town. If you are into biking, there is a great bike path along the beach between the sand and the road.

4 hour trip with interbus. trip was fine except for the last 5 km which has some rocky roads. after checking in, i go for a walk. within the minute i get offered recreational smoke from the rastifarians. they waste no time, do they? i just walked on. i'll see how the mongering scene is (if anything) and i'll report back. otherwise, some well needed rest is planned for my few days here.

BTW - it is HOT here. if you come here, i recommend a place with a/c.

Don't miss Manzanillo...or seaford at Maxi's ...a playa to die for!

its low season, half the places are closed. closest place for mongering is 1 hour south of here. been drinking too much to even consider taking the bumpy road there. so i head back to SJO int he evening and bless the beautiful ladies with my pressence. in summary, puerto viejo is a nice place to chill, not to monger.

I was there back in December. It is a calm and very relaxing town. Didn't see ANY mongering opportunities but I wasn't there for that. I hiked in Cahuita Park and then I went south and did an all day hike in Gandoca Manzanillo which was incredible. If you enjoy hiking definitely do Manzanillio. Try and track down a guide by the name of Ricky (looks like Bob Marley's brother and cost me $40 for the entire day but he knows the turf amzingly well). If not a hiker then just lay back and enjoy the beautiful beaches since there isn't much else to do.

Mongering opportunities or not, this thread makes me want to return to the Carribean side for a week just to chill, surf, fish, hike, nap and eat seafood. I can also oggle the eurotrash gals who are too young to take me seriously

Both Sansa http://www.flysansa.com/ and Nature Air http://www.natureair.com/ have intermittent flights from San Jose to Limon. You will need to take a shuttle, bus or taxi for the remaining 60 km south to Puerto Viejo. IMHO, it is better to just grab Interbus from San Jose.
