I'll be in SJ June 3- June 10th and would like to go fishing. Does anyone know of how I can get into a group so I don't have to pay the full price for a 1 day trip? I'm open to any ideas. I was thinking of Quepos. If I leave from SJ can I return later that evening or should I stay overnight.

thanks

Quepos is at least a 3.5 hour drive away from San Jose, you will have to stay overnight! Have a look at this route planner of Costa Rica to see how long it should take: http://www.yourtravelmap.com
A closer destination for fishing is Herradura.

Wiley64,
Your best bet is to check with the desk at your hotel. Most hotels can arrange a fishing trip for you. If nothing else, stop at the desk at the HDR, and they can book it for you.

From San Jose, Los Sueños (in Herradura) is probably one of the best places to look, with Quepos being farther to the South. You can do it in a day, but it's a long day, as the ride to the coast takes at least a couple hours or more (each way), depending on traffic / weather. And most boats leave the dock by 7:30 a.m. and return around 4 p.m. (you can do the math).

Buena Suerta,
MG

Thanks for the info guys!
I'll be staying at the Presidente, so I'll check with them on trips. I was thinking of taking a flight to fishing localtion if available. I don't relish a long bus ride back to SJ. I wouldn't mind spending the night so much but hate checking out for one day and coming back with luggage.

Well, if that's the case, then that's a whole different animal. If flying, then you would probably be better off going to Quepos. I didn't realize you were considering flying.

You can fly Sansa Airlines ( www.flysansa.com ) from SJO (Juan SantaMaria Airport) directly to Quepos. Or you can fly Nature Air ( www.natureair.com ) from SJO/Pavas (Tobias Bolanos Airport) into Quepos also. Flights are only about 30 minutes, and you can get them for as cheap as $29 each way.

Hell, for that matter, you can fly just about anywhere in the country within 45 minutes or less from San Jose. You might think about heading South and fish out of Drake Bay or Zancudo, or even Panama! Or you could head North/West into Liberia or Tamarindo and fish the areas from Papagayo down towards Flamingo and parts further South. Or you could head East and fish the Carribean side. Basically, some of the best fishing destinations in the world are only a short flight away.

Here's a good thread that you might like!

Whatever you decide, good luck offshore! Make sure to post a trip report when you return!

Thanks for the good info and advice MG! BTW that thread was a great way to end the week and look forward to a good fishing trip. I will definately post a trip report. Hopefully, I have good luck with the offshore fishing as well as the pink snapper!
