A pal just told me of some possibility that Cuban cigars sold in Central America aren't always necessarily Cuban and may, in fact, be simply relabeled (i.e., counterfeit). Still, I was hoping to pick him up some Cuban cigars. Some real ones. With that in mind, does anybody (any connoisseurs?) have any suggestions where to purchase some legit Cuban cigars? Or do you think he is just misled? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks. |

Last month I visited the Vegas Y Santiago cigar factory that was a 1 hour bus ride from Coca Cola ($1.20 each way.) They have just surpassed the 1 milion cigars rolled by hand this year. Their tobacco is pure Cuban, but the wrappers are Equdorean cause the Cubans don't sell wrappers to non Cuban producers. Great cigars. The half owner is a German named Rudy. Don/Tuto's in San Ramon als has Cuban tobacco cigars. Superior. They also sell via internet from their Miami website. For those who do not know, Cuba sells tobacco to many Latin nations and that raw weed ends up in many US cigars, including many sold in military PXs. So much for the embargo. The cigar labels don't say so, but, the tocacco is often Cuban. |

I have no data to argue what you have stated other then the reality of Cuban American politics as practiced in South Florida and that tells me that the Cuban American members of Congress from Miami would never let that go unnoticed. |

Bigbossman stop by the duty free shop in the airport. the Cuban cigars are real and the price is also very good.not to mention the price on liquor. have a great trip. |

If you don’t buy at Duty Free, there is a cigar store on calle 7; exit Hotel Presidente, turn left, walk to corner, turn right across Avenida Central and walk most of a block uphill. On your right will be a tobacco shop. I stopped by there last month and saw some very nice authentic Habanos. A suggestion from their inventory would be the H. Upmann Mag 46 or the Partagas Serie D #4. Counterfeit Cuban cigars are abundant in San Jose. To give you an example, here is a web site that sells everything you need to dress up the dog-turd and pass it off as a Habano. http://www.justfakes.com/ . To help understand and help identify fake Cubans, take a look at http://www.cigarnexus.com/counsel/count ... index.html. The information is a little dated about the packaging, bands, boxes and such. But, scroll down to the part about looking at the cigar cap. They explain how to inspect cap of each cigar. All Havana parejos (straight sided/ traditional cigars) have a triple seam that is very visible. You can actually see three fine lines from the flagging of the cap as it was wrapped around the head of the cigar. If you do not see this…..you are looking at a fake. If it does have this….. you still may be looking at a fake. But, most likely if it has a triple seam, it is authentic. Cuban Torpedo or “figurados†(Monte Cristo #2 etc.) do not have a triple seam. The one place without a doubt has the real deal is at the only Licensed (LCDH) Cuban Retailer in San Jose - http://www.habanoscr.net/. |

Beware. U.S. Customs will hassle you, confiscate and perhaps give you other punishments if they catch you bringing Cuban cigars back into the U.S. |
