Train goes from San Jose to Caldera and then they bus you to Puntarenas.
Spend 3 or 4 hours in Puntarenas and then bus back to the train and back to San Jose. It is about a 12 - 13 hour day.

We just want the train ride. Can you estimate the train ride time to CALDERA? Would we have a long layover in Caldera? Things to do in Caldera? thanks for the info.

Nada in Caldera. It is the Pacific port of Costa Rica which is why the train service was originally established. They take you to Puntarenas so you can find some activity.

If you just want the train ride you can take the bus back to San Jose. There is very frequent service from Puntarenas. You might still have to buy a round trip train ticket not sure about that.
