x man,

Might want to pm prostoner as he is taking classes in SJ right now.

I will be taking spanish lessons while I'm down at a school call MONTANA LINDA. The school is in OROSI 1.5 hrs south of SJ. Don't think it as intense as SJ shools more layed back and casual. Have not been there before, am only going on what a fellow monger had told me.

This is where I went

CRLA Costa Rica Languauge Academy. They have 1 on 1 teaching as well as classroom, based on your budget.

http://www.learn-spanish.com/

If I recall correctly, I paid $8-10 per hour for Private lessons, this was about 1 1/2 yrs ago.

They are located about a 5 minute taxi ride from Sportsmens about halfway or a little more towards San Pedro Mall. We walked it a couple times

I went to CRLA in SJ for 2 weeks recently. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
The pricing is listed on their webpage. The private lessons are now $18/hr.

Definately go to CRLA. Been twice, once for 4 weeks. Great school. prices are good and if your a returning student you get 20% discount. Going back in August for 3 more weeks. www.learn-spanish.com or www.spanishandmore.com both are there websites. Lots of hot little euro chicks and american college K*ds. you also get discounts on travel, they arrange busses, and much more. Its just east of sna pefdro mall on the same street as hotel M I believe (second left behind the subaru dealership). Its close to my apartment so a nice walk in the morning.

X,
I'm enrolled in CRLA (Costa Rica Language Academy) right now and it has done wonders. Finished day eight today and have learned quite a bit of Spanish already. Enough to talk bull**** to the chicas at least. I'd definitly recommend it.
The school is basically right across the street from Hotel M so if you stay there it's a 30 second walk.
Previous posters are correct on the students...many hot Euro and American girls hanging out for eye candy  Students are pretty freindly and many gather at the clubs around the SanPedro mall after hours so when you walk in you will be liable to see a familar face.
The school and teachers really seem to care and make sure you are progressing at a pace you are comfortable with. Had an older guy in my class the first week but he couldn't keep up so they pulled him out and gave him private sessions for the same cost as the class. There are also dance and cooking classes avaliabe at no charge.
Another nice perk is the airport pickup and dropoff. Saves you $50 right there! I was three hours later than my 'arrival time' and driver was waiting right outside the airport door.
I will be attending through the first days of August so can show you around and hang out if you'd like...
The website address is www.spanishandmore.com Do yourself a favor and check it out! I'm doing three hours a day (didn't think my brain could take anymore than that). The class goes from 9am to noon. The lunch at the school is $2-$3 for some really good food along with free drinks and snacks. Afternoon classes go from 1pm to 4pm depending on the number of hours you take.
Oh, just don't do the homestay. I took a guy I met at school to DR the other night and a chica ask where he was staying. When he said with a CR family she immediatly walked away. Of course, might be a good way to blow off an 'uninteresting' girl
P.S. I am in no way affiliated with CRLA and won't get a discount as I pre-paid despite the above sounding like an advertisement.

Prostoner,
How did the guy like the home stay? I am thinking about trying it for 4 nights. I will be in CR from August 4th thru the 11th so if you are still around that would be great. How far is the DR and SL from CRLA?

Is there a possibility of getting action from young Eurochicks?

If the taxi knows where the school is located, the ride to del ray or new fantasy would be less than 2K colonies...More like 800 colones to the del ray. It is no more than an 8min drive assuming no traffic.

Best way to learn a language is to get a tica girlfriend who doesn't speak a word, and to stop hanging out with us...

You'll learn QUICK!

That MIGHT not be the cheapest way to learn though....

Notice I said girlfriend, not hooker...

Although we all pay for it in the end, generally people don't mind the ride with a GF...

Although, once you start buying her hardware, it can get expensive FAST!

In January I took private Spanish lessons at Universal de Idiomas. I'm going back in August. It's in the same block as El Presidente Hotel, opposite corner. I highly recommend it and the location is great.

X -
1) Mi amigo really enjoyed the homestay. He said it was great having the three meals a day and getting to talk Spanish with native speakers. I know he seemed to catch on quicker than I did despite some 'tutoring' I got from a sweet tica  Only problem I saw with homestay is it is NOT chica friendly. Other than that, I'd say it is a great deal.
2) I actually leave on August 7 and only in school thru the 3rd.
3)As MChris said, taxi is close. Perhaps a 20-30 minute walk to Del Ray. The school is a few hundred meters from San Pedro mall for reference.
QBF - Cause of budget, found having a 'girlfriend' is a GREAT way to learn spanish. Mine is pretty good and find myself learning a lot more quickly on days she is around. And she just used to be a pro  Although to be honest, I might ended spending more to keep her away from DR than I spent on the school
Terminator - If your the kind of guy (young, guapo etc.) who can pick up college chicks in the US then that possibilty definitly exists. Know some of the younger guys at school are hooking up. However, if not, I'd say chances are pretty slim.
