How is the road to the volcano? Drive time? Is this a good way or would it be better to go from SJ? Thanks in advance.

I drove from south of Liberia (Cañas) to La Fortuna in January. The 2 1/2 hour drive was leisurely and offered some very nice views of Lake Arenal. The road, Hwy 142, has a narrow cartway, but is in pretty good shape. (You should add about another hour travel time from Liberia...as Cañas is about 50 - 60 km south of Liberia on the Interamerican Hwy.)

I liked this route to Arenal much better than traveling from SJ.

I heard they had a major mudslide recently... Is that still closing the road?

I don´t know...my information is from January...obviously, your info is more up to date than mine. Where did the mudlside occur...on Hwy 1 or Hwy 142?

QBFox,

Thanks, for the update.

Versatile,

I guess that rules out the scenic route around Lake Arenal...lo siento.

You can still go around the south side, on Hwy 1, but it's much further...
