Post subject:  Bringing your catch home
Just a little question about those who catch tuna and other fine fish and how they get the catch home. I plan on starting my trip in September in Jaco to fish, but then fall into the monger mode after that in SJ. Do they offer shipping service for fish or is it basically left for you to deal with. If so, who is reputable to deal with as far as trusting that you will have fish at home when you get there. (Mind you.........I would ship the fish to a friend)

Any advice would be great.

Good luck getting fish through customs. I'm not sure, but aren't fish susceptible to all kinds of bacteria. I know they don't allow fruit for this reason, so I don't see them allowing possibly tainted fish. I could be wrong. I'm sure MG (or Irish Drifter) will correct me.

Maybe MG has some info as he fishes in Bahamian waters, I think, but not sure if he brings the fish back to Florida. Would be shocked :shock: if the USDA would allow non commercial fish to be shipped into the US.

Forget "shipping" the fish. Due to the time it would take, and what it would cost, it's not worth it. Besides that, do you want to open a styrofoam cooler with fish in it, 3 weeks after you ship it, when it finally arrives at your doorstep?!?!! Shipping companies in CR are not known for their expeditious shipping qualities.

As far as the airlines..... each airline is different, with different rules, regarding fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, etc.... About 3 years ago, I thought about (trying) to bring fish on the plane with me, back to Florida. FUHGEDDABOUDIT !!!!! I think I talked to 5 different people at American Airlines, in 5 different departments, and I got 5 DIFFERENT ANSWERS!

I do fish in Bahamian waters, but the fish we catch gets fillet'd, and frozen each night. And it all stays in the chest freezer on the boat, until we get back to the marina on the mainland.

Bottom line... I'm sure you could bring "some" fish back to the states with you, but I don't know if it'd be worth the trouble. You might end up paying $300 to bring back $100 worth of fish. I don't try anymore. It was a hassle, just trying to bring fish on the Sansa plane, from Flamingo to San Jose last weekend. They charge $1 per pound, and we brought back 73 lbs. You can do the math! But it sure was good!!!! :lol:

IMHO... go fishing, catch lots of fish, take lots of pictures, have a nice dinner, and give the rest to the local people. Just my opinion.... :roll:

I like tuna and wanted to bring back some steaks if it was at all possible. It is looking like it is easier to just buy it at the local fish market here in Houston.

Thanks for the feedback and story about what hassle it would be to even try and travel with fish.
