| Post subject: | Shooting Ranges in San Jose |
Hosting a couple of buddies for a 40th Birthday party in CR and was thinking a visit to a shooting range might be fun. Granted, other than a .22 at summer camp, I have never fired a gun, but it sounds like it could be an interesting way to kill an afternoon (no pun intended). So does anyone know if there are any shooting ranges near the gultch - of course, they would also have to be able to provide the guns and amo. I tried doing a search but nothing obvious popped up. Calle 9 opposite the NY Bar after around 9pm you can experience a reverse shooting range where the Ticos shoot at you and you can practice ducking. The cost is whatever you have in your pockets. Try to hide enough in your shoes for the Hospital visit which you may need afterwards. lol |

I have heard there is a range located in Sabana Park near the the National Stadium that is used for testing gun permit applicants. I do not know if they have recreational shooting there and if they supply the guns and ammunition. Probably the best thing to do is stop in at a gun store when you get here and ask them. |

There is one in Cartago and another on the road to Rancho Redondo - going east from San Jose, through Guadalupe, continue on the concrete highway which is Ruta 6. Just past the little barrio of Vista del Mar you will see the kilometer post marker "Ruta 6, Km 12" on the right side of the road. There will also be a CNFL nature preserve on the left. The drive just past that is an old run down looking farm house and tractor shed on the left. Turn left into that drive. It is a family run stables with horse back riding lessons and beyond that they have a shooting range. It is all on the same property. Like everything else in CR, it is not easy to find. The owner speaks English. |

The most popular one is El Poligono de la La Sabana, I don't know the address, that's where most people get their shooting license. |

Thanks for all the information so far. Seems that shooting high powered guns in CR might not be that easy as I suspected given all the weapons I have seen in country. BTW, the last time I was in CR, a Tico friend who just got a job in security, showed me his pistol (it was a Luger - not his penis). The gun was concealed and to my knowledge, this guy had no training in firearms. Anyone with other suggestions on rifle ranges, please feel free to chime in here or pm me. Thanks again, Lance |

I heard back from one of my e-mails. Krometal stated "To my knowledge, there are no ranges in San Jose that rent firearms." armeriarex@racsa.co.cr was a bounceback and I haven't heard yet from "epolini." YO LM: Damn, a topic that old Circus cannot remember ever coming up. My only question is why in hell have you never fired a gun before......at 40 years of age? Not to mention, going to CR on your initial introduction to firearms. I remember grandaddy holding my shoulders while I was firing a rabbit ear shotgun at age nine. Geezz, what is going on with our last several generations? lol |

Hi Circus, In my initial post I mentioned that I used to shoot .22 rifles while at summer camp (I guess that some of the vets and hunters out there wouldn't classify .22 as firearms). I went to a YMCA camp in the Berkshires where there was a rifle range and I was okay at shooting(I think I got up to marksman in the sitting position). One thing I do remember was all the bras they hung on the rifle range. It was quite an effective way to get teens to focus on shooting since bras meant: Breathe, Relax, Align and Shoot. It has been a long while, but thought an afternoon on the rifle range would be a quick and fun way to restore some of that spent testosterone. Guess I'll have to find another way to replenish... YO LM: Really not knocking at ya. And yes, firing a 22 rifle does qualify as an introduction to firearms. My initial surprise was your looking for a range in CR. That was a new one for this old bloat....never had thought about it before. But that's good. It's always refreashing for a new topic of interest finding it's way to this unsultry group of gingos and non-gingos. |
