Does anyone know how far it is from the Paradisus Playa Conchal resort to the action in San Jose?

It is a long way from San Jose near Playa Flamingo on Northwest coast. I am guessing 4 hours. A very nice resort or was 8 to 10 years ago but very limited PFP in the area. Maybe and little near Playa Flamingo.rbc100

Oh, man, this really sucks! I had no idea it was that far.

Anyone have any recommendations for some fun close to the resort?

Type in a search for Tamarindo also, probably your best bet up there.

It is a beautiful beach and is about 5 hours from SJ. Take carryout to Conchal and have a great time. Or visit Bar Amberes at Flamingo while staying at Conchal.

What do you guys think about this:

Arrive at the resort with group (concrete industry function)
Ditch group and catch a flight from Tamarindo airport to San Jose ($175)
Walk in to HDR and get a room
Enjoy the action

Any problem getting into HDR or similar hotel without reservation?

Ironhorse-sure.....no problem getting a room at the HDR with no reservation. Just show up on a day when they have a vacancy and I'm sure they will let you have it.
Sorry....I couldn't help myself.

Ironhorse,
On a good day, the drive from Playa Conchal to SJO is 5 - 6 hours. Fiedler did it a couple weeks ago, leaving Flamingo around 2 o'clock in the morning, and it still took 4.5 hours. Best bet is to fly from Tamarindo to SJO on Nature Air or Sansa. Only a 30 minute flight.

You can do a search on the board for P4P action in the Tamarindo / Flamingo area, but it is very limited. And from what I understand, the Conchal Resort is not "chica" friendly. It's a nice golf resort, with many families and eco-tourists. They're trying to be another "4-seasons" resort, if that tells you anything.

Good luck & have fun.

Thanks, MG.

Well, I'm here at Paradisus Playa Conchal and this place sucks. I'm going to catch a flight to San Jose tomorrow and hit the HDR. I hope I can get a room. Looking forward to some decent food, as well. The food here at the resort is terrible.

If you have time tonight, take a 5 minute ride to Brasilito, and have dinner at a restaurant in the middle of town called "The Happy Snapper". You'll be happy you did. While you're in Brasilito, if you need any "vitamins", stop at the local farmacia, and ask for the chemist (Johnny). Tell him you're a friend of "Mikey-B's". He'll take care of you.

After dinner, take a 10 minute ride to Flamingo, and stop into a bar called "Amberes", but not before 10 pm. There's only going to be 4 or 5 chica's there, the hottest might be a 6 or 7 (if you're lucky). Tell the hostess (Sue) that you're a friend of mine, and she'll recommend someone. And if the chica's try to give you that "cien" bullsh*t, move on to the next one. You might be the only "customer" in the bar, and they can't afford to play hard-to-get.

In the middle of Flamingo (at the bottom of the hill), about a 3 minute walk from the bar, there's a hotel called "The Mariner Inn". They rent rooms for the night for $29. Nothing glamorous, but it's better than bringing them back to Conchal.

I know it's not much of an option, but it's better than slamming your d*ck in a door, or pounding your pud all night.

Good luck & have fun.

MG

I don't know if this is standard procedure for them but on my first trip (June 2005) we tried to get 2 rooms at HDR without a reservation and we were quoted $88+ taxes ($102) for a single at the desk as walk-in. I think the rate today is about $70, back then it was probably $60.

It is 5 hours to/from Flamingo under good driving conditions. It took us 7 hours last year to get back to SJ in the traffic and heavy rain.

I agree with MG, fly Sansa. It's more expensive, but saves you time and headaches.

Playa Conchal is about 20-30 minutes from Tamarindo via taxi or bus. Do not even think about going to San Jose via land. I've done this three times and it takes about 5-6 hours depending on traffic. Fly Natureair and enjoy the 35 minute flight over the mountains.

Personally, I think the "resort" in Playa Conchal looks tasteless. We picked up some people there on the way to Flamingo beach. I felt sorry for these people that appeared to be "trapped" on this resort property. It reminded me of the huge resort that I stayed in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. I guess it was okay in the Dominican since eveywhere outside the resorts was a gutter. However, why would you want to stay at a resort like this in Costa Rica and isolate yourself from this great country and its people?

You might as well stay in Florida!
