I recommend the all day trip to see the Tortuguero Canals.
You are picked up at 7 AM and head for the mountains. You climb thru rain forest until you hit a tunnel thru to the Eastern slope of a mountain pass. The vegetation is constantly changing. We stopped to pick up some beer for the trip and continued to the lowlands covered with ranches and banana plantations. Yes, it reminded me of Florida. It is an area which is poorer than the central valley. Many rivers flow to the sea in a changing river bed pattern depending on the last earthquake.
The Tortuguero Canal area is a national park and reminds me of the south Georgia Okefenokee Swamp. We toured in our own covered flat bottomed boad powered by an outboard motor. Some of the birds are identical and there are the usual turtles and lizards. Instead of alligators there are crocodiles. They behave the same, so if you are used to gators you will see crocs doing the same sunning and avoidance behavior. I did see some sloth and rhino beetles which look like mini-rhinos the size of a mouse.
We had lunch at a nice oceanside cafe at a village with a boat dock on the canal.
The village had about 50 residents including a guy from Florida, living there with his parrot and selling ice cream at his shop/house. I am sure he had a chica companion tucked away somewhere. It was on the ocean and the beach was nice but muddy. It had a few dogs and k*ds playing on it.

On the way back our van blew it's engine at the top of the hill leading to the mountain pass and we were stranded in the dark and cold wind until a wrecker picked up the van with us inside and took us back into the city.
Three other cars also had trouble and stopped within 100 yards of our breakdown because of the long steep hill approach to the pass.

In spite of the problems I really enjoyed the tour and would do it again.

The previous day we had visited the Poas volcano and the oxcart factory at Sarchi. Poas was cloud covered and we did not see it at all. I got cold and retreated to the cafe for some hot chocolate and wind protection. Last year I visited the Irazu volcano in February and it is spectatular.

Sarchi is a tourist shopping spot and not something I enjoy. The factory is not currently used much but is interesting if you like hand wood working. Sarchi is a nice town but not worth a visit in my opinion.

Your opinion may vary.
