Versatile,

Sarchi is less than hour away from San Jose. It is up the road from the airport on the InterAmerican Hwy (get off at the Naranjo exit). Sarchi is few km east.

The town is a designated artesan location...very quiet and peaceful. The town is known for its crafted woodwork and furniture.

You can take a bus to San Ramon...and then either take a bus or taxi from there. Your best bet is to contact some of the drivers listed under the "dependable drivers" sticky in the Hotels, Resorts, Accomodations & Transportation forum. My best guess is $25 - $30 to take you there or negotiate an all day deal for around $40 - $50.

Actually they have direct buses from SJ but they leave and return at inconvenient times (ie leave SJ in the afternoon but only return direct from Sarchi in the morning). So you might be able to take the first direct bus to Sarchi that leaves SJ shortly after noon, but you'd have to find another way back if you didn't want to spend the night.

Also, your best bet if you don't mind changing buses is to take one of the buses that leave SJ every 10 minutes for Alajuela (not San Ramon) and then catch another bus to Sarchi from there. The buses between Alajuela and Sarchi leave every half hour so you won't have to wait very long or you could check out the town. The buses from SJ to San Ramon aren't quite as frequent as the Alajuela buses and they actually take you past the exit for Sarchi and then also you have to catch another bus or cab to backtrack. Actually, I think the bus you'd take from San Ramon to Sarchi is the return bus to Alajuela since they leave with the same frequency and Sarchi is about halfway between the two towns.

I'm not so sure about spending an entire afternoon in Sarchi unless you're really into shopping, but it makes a good stop to combine with some other western villages such as Heredia, Alajuela, Grecia and possibly Zarcero (I wouldn't go any further than that unless you were traveling on to Fortuna). The problem with doing the multi-stop thing is that getting on and off the bus for so many places greatly complicates things and that is where hiring a driver to take you around could really pay off, particularly if you find 1 or 2 other guys who also want to go to split the cost.

Prolijo has a great point. Several neat towns to visit up in that direction. With two or three one could hire a driver and make the rounds to two or three places. Grecia is my favorite town in Costa Rica to date a likely where I will live if I make the move to CR unless I find anouther favorite. As he says you can take the bus to any of the places but that is not for everyone but it is my main mode of travel in CR

Thanks to all for the info. I will most likely take a cab along with my amiga.
