•October 13, 2006 New Law's First Casualty

World Gaming, which was once valued at almost £120m and only last month was on the verge of being taken over for £56m by Sportingbet.com, went bust today.

The company, based in Antigua, London, and Vancouver, had relied on the US for 95% of its business and became the first fatal casualty of the anti-Internet gaming legislation that president Bush signed into law today when its shares tumbled a staggering 92% last week.

Damn, this shit is getting serious. I've had some good luck recently winning some money at both of the Sports Books that I do business with. Normally I would just leave the money there, but with all the rumblings in the U.S. with closings ,I've taken most of my money out and put it in the bank. If some of these businesses have lost 92% of their value in a week, what's to stop them from keeping all the money in the accounts and running like hell? I'd hate to have to try to chase them down for my money.

It's getting worse.

Last night I was showing a friend how PartyPoker.com works. When I clicked on DEPOSIT I got this screen:

Cashier deposit error message.

The President of the United States has signed legislation that now causes PartyGaming to have to cease taking wagers from US customers. We will also suspend accepting deposits from US customers while we reevaluate our business model for the US and assess potential offerings to US customers that would be within the new law.

This will not affect the Play For Free games and we will be seeking to provide additional products and services to our US player community.

Naturally, your PartyAccount will remain accessible.

Non-US players and all Play For Free services will not be affected.

They've also added a link where you can voice your displeasure with the new law. It says:

To Whom It May Concern

I am a voter, I am a poker player and I am mad.

Under your watch, Congress passed legislation that prohibits me from playing the great game of poker on the Internet. Legislation that impacts millions online poker players in the United States like me deserves more debate than a back-room deal. You have an opportunity to correct this injustice.

Poker is a great American game with deep roots in this country. Throughout history presidents, generals, Members of Congress, Supreme Court justices and average citizens have enjoyed poker with family and friends. Poker is what I like to do for entertainment, just like a round of golf or going to a movie.

Unlike other forms of gambling, poker is not a game of chance. It is a game where performance is merited and a community game where the "house" is not your competition. These are real and significant differences. Simply putting the word "Internet" in front of poker does not change the qualities of the game and it should not make the people who play it suspect.

I am urging you to support amending this new Internet gambling law so that it has an exemption for poker. Please note, that other forms of Internet gambling such as horseracing, lotteries and fantasy sports are already protected under this law. An exemption for poker is not unreasonable, it is good public policy and would help preserve and protect an American tradition.

I look forward to your support for a poker exemption.

Again, I am a voter, I am a poker player and I remember.

Faithfully,

It happens not only when you try to deposit money. Even if you already have money in your Party Poker account and you try to sit at a table it won't let you. A friend of mine, tried to play last night, AND COULDN'T.

Bodog still works. :D

You can always try chess tournaments. They don't seem to be messing with games of complete information yet. The only chancy part is who gets white.

Ahh... but the good thing is that the "game" is back on the streets; local representation... and discretely relational… vs. being "out there" on the web... where everything is exposed... especially to interested parties w know-how and "agencies" that have less than benign motivations behind their curiosity.
