Post subject:  Day Trips from San Jose
I'll be in CR in December with a few friends...we plan on a couple of days in San Jose and Jaco....Can anyone recommend some day trips from San Jose...besides the usual, we also want to do some tourist stuff and see whats outside of San Jose....Thanks

I don't know if you would consider this "the usual," :? but the Poas Volcano makes a nice day trip. :)

You might want to take an ATV adventure. Think that qualifies as unusual for most tourists.

I think the "usual" refers to banging 20 year old Latinas all day. :D He's looking to do something besides that. :P

Definitely do the ATV tour. It is pretty cool. One suggestion: don't wear your good/expensive clothing because it may get dirty/ruined. I lost a fairly new pair of sneakers and a t-shirt, they were unwashable from that red clay up in the mountains.

How 'bout "Bungee Jumping"??? You might want to give it a shot.....It's only about a 30 minute ride from San Jose. Just hope your juevos are big enough! Better you than me !!! :shock:

Orange is right about the "usual"...the waterfalls sounds interesting...ATV riding or bungee jumping is similar to "lets jump out of an airplane"....I'm looking for tourist ideas....I know there is more to CR than the gulch....any more ideas? Thanks.....

Took the 4-in-1 with my wingman Tom. Ask at the DR tour desk by the front door. Gets you the Poas Volcano, waterfalls, river tour and mariposa/hummingbirds in one day, including a good breakfast and good lunch. (Good as in > Del Mar) About $80. Leave about 6:30am, back about 7pm. I liked it.

Next time I am doing the canopy tour, and the ATV. I'll take a chica if I can find the right one. Might even BYOB if the timing is right.

Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfalls are real close to each other. They make a good combo for a full day trip. Alternatively, you can do ether of them as a ½-day trip. The 4 in 1 is too much for one day and you do not get to see too much of the waterfalls. I like to take the ½-day trips. Then spend the rest of the afternoon at ZB or oasis. Still have time for happy hour at the HDR. But that is just one mans opinion

Seemed like we saw ALL the waterfalls! Down to the bus stop by the old collapsed bridge (with the new one on top). What did we miss?

The part that was lame was the river tour - not enough animals.

When you go on the waterfall trip they take you top of the falls. You get off the bus at the humming bird sanctuary. Then you get a walking tour of all the levels of the falls you get up close with great photo opportunities. Be repaired to walk down hundreds of stairs. The bus will pick you up at the bottom.

That's exactly what happend in the 4-in-1 tour I took, except we started at the mariposa preserve, and had lunch at the humming bird sanctuary.

So I presume we did not miss anything? The tour was very well organized.

When I went on the tour, I was with someone that was on the 4-in one tour the day before and was taking this tour because they did not see much of the falls. I did not see any reason to not believe him. However, thanks for setting things streat. How long were you at the falls? I am happy you got to see all of the fall and had a great time.

I still do not think I would like a 12-13 hour tour.
A great day to me would be leave at 8:00 back by 1:00 lunch, ZB, nap,
However, to each its own.

We made the full falls path, from the humming birds to the bus stop at the end. With lunch, the mariposa and hummingbirds, were there about 2+ hours. Like I said, the river tour was the bust. If you go, bring binoculars and a VERY long lens for your camera.

And yes, it was a full 12-13 hours. If your friend had a shorter time, they might have cut the falls.

Our tour guide, Eduardo as I recall, did an excellent job. The tour guide is a big factor in enjoying things, because he also sets the pace. My wingman, Tom, is a serious hiker, and we had some 60+yo on the tour. Eduardo did a great job. Yes, it included the souveneir stops and such, but it was still a good tour.
