Preakness Stakes Saturday May 20TH:

Fresh off my Derby triumph I’ve really thought about this upcoming 2nd jewel of the Triple Crown for the past 10 days and I’m truly torn. I so much want to see Barbaro be the great championship horse that I know he is capable, yet I know Tommy Albertrani personally (Trainer of Bernardini) so I also would like to see him do well & even win.

Let’s get to the facts. It is very rare for a horse to win the Preakness if he has not run in the derby. With that trend in mind, you throw out all except Barbaro, Sweetnorthernsaint, & Brother Derek, for 1st place in the race. Now can Barbaro repeat his incredible performance or can either of the others increase theirs.

Can Barbaro Bounce SURE HE CAN! He is a horse that is used to long layoffs between races and this is his first test coming back in 14 days. On the flip side of that all 3 are coming off 14 days and Barbaro is the horse that is the most lightly raced of the 3. Let us not forget he is undefeated in 6 career starts, and although he had a dream trip in the derby he was hand ridden home the last 1/8 mile or so, and is sharp and working well for this 2nd leg.

Brother Derek & Sweetnorthernsaint will both get much easier better trips than then in the Derby so if either runs to form Barbaro will have a much tougher time disposing these two this time around. Yet I still think they are highly overrated & will go with the following.

Let us now move to Bernardini the lightly raced colt in the Albertrani barn. Albertrani, who will name Castellano to ride his colt when entries are taken Wednesday for the Middle Jewel and he breezed five furlongs yesterday and looks fresh, strong and ready for this big test and step up in class. After his smashing maiden-breaker, Bernardini proved ready again for his next challenge – a quantum leap to Grade 3 stakes competition in the Withers at Belmont on April 29. Bernardini scored by nearly four lengths as jockey Javier Castellano lost his whip in the stretch run. This horse if not for a lung infection earlier in the year was pointed towards the Derby & Albertrani has maintained the entire time this horse is the best in his stable.

The rest of the field I personally give no shot to, and this is by far the worst BETTING RACE in some time. Barbaro will be no better than 3-5 maybe lower which means Win Place & Show wagering is not valued. Even if you pick a long shot and Barbaro wins, the place & show pools will be low payouts with again no value.

You have two schools of thought here, hope that Barbaro bounces and you can catch lighting in a bottle or admit to yourself. That Barbaro will once again prevail and look for a solid 2nd place finisher.

Personally it’s a bad race to bet… Bernardini will be long 10 to 20 to 1 odds. You may get $20.00 to 40 dollars for $1 with an exacta with Barbaro & Bernardini depending on how long he goes off. With that in mind I will spend only $20.00 dollars here on a straight up Exacta Barbaro 1st & Bernardini second… 20 x 20 to 40 bucks will it’s a solid investment and a good payoff if it comes in.

SO there you have it My Preakness selections!

I'm not much of a horse player but I do appreciate all the work you put into this analysis.
Just typing all up would have given me a cramp.

Good luck.

You are not alone here, what a shame, Hope he does not have to be put down. Had several tri and exacta boxes with Bernaradini and Barbaro.

Luckily on a last second hunch put $ 20 on Bernadini's nose to win

I am a lucky man to have broken even today......as you said, what could have been......
