Has anyone ever been to Los Muelles de San Carlos on the northern Costa Rican border? I read that during the Iran-Contra War there was an airfield on John Hull's ranch that was used to transport supplies to the "contras" in Nicaragua and drugs to the US. If anyone has been there, is there anything to see or do much? |

I do not know if it is related or the same place but the present International Airport in Liberia was originally built, supposedly, by the CIA to ferry supplies to the Contras during the war in Nicaragua. |

If you go to Quepos (just north of Manuel Antonio Park) there is a restaurant called the Avian Restaurant (I believe). It is right across the street from the Costa Verde resort. One of the two planes that were used to ferry supplies, etc. into Nicaragua (the one not shot down - and was left abandoned by the CIA at Juan Santa Maria Airport in San Jose) is now incorporated into that restaurant (the inside of the plane is actually the bar). A history of Iran Contra along with information about the airfield you are inquiring about is printed on the restaurant menus. I apologize, but I can't remember the specific details about the ranch or owners name, etc. that the airfield was secretly built on. Stinky |

Great report Stinky. The El Avian is one of my favorite places to eat in Manuel Antonio. Great place for watching the sun go down, dining by candlelight, and the food is good albeit not cheap. Doesn't open until around 5-6pm so don't go too early. And congratulations, you got the story right. The plane that forms the foundation for the restaurant is NOT the one that the Sandanistas shot down but its twin sister. It was dismantled piece by piece and then driven down to be reassembled at its current location. Would have loved to have seen those trucks crossing the bridge at Quepos. When I was there last August a semi took out a large portion of the bridge and fell into the river below. Road was closed for almost 4 hours. |
