Been reading up on my blackjack rules lately and have been itching to play. My partner and amiga plays regularly. We went to the Amapola tonight and I bought in with $100. I played pretty good according to basic strategy, but there were times when she would nudge me and give me help. I won, she lost, but she has a mathematical mind. Anyway it was fun. I'll study a little more and practice again. It's a lot of energy. And there is a smoking hot dealer in there I've seen in my gym for a couple of years. If you can play good enough to stay even more or less, it's a blast. I'll be back, but not stupid, I set my limits. By the way, she's cool. I staked her $100 because I wanted to go to the casino with her and she sincerely asked me how much she owed me. Player, told her not to worry about it. I offer, it's theres. They ask, I want it back. And, I wouldn't have been up as much without her help. She said if I was betting aggresively I could have come out with a grand. C'est la vie, I'm satisfied to play 4 hours and be even, much less ahead. |

VB, I had a question I meant to ask you. Over Super Bowl weekend I played twice at the Horseshoe. First day I used my match play coupon and got a double-down. I added my $50 no problem and won. The 2nd day I also had a double-down opportunity with my match play coupon and the pit critter said I could only double my original bet (no double on the coupon). He even asked the pit supervisor. I tried to explain to them that it was actually in the house's favor (even if is wasn't) to let me double both but they wouldn't budge. What has been your experience with this? Wit |

I'm just interested in learning and getting better at the game. I just look at it as entertainment. I always set my limit to spend going in. And don't pull out the plastic. Like I said, I'm happy being good enough to sit there and break even over the long haul.. Quite a few cute chicas in the Amapola too. |

As long as you can continue to play that way you should have no problems. Most people I have seen or met who have a problem see gambling as a way to make money not as entertainment. |

To me its a good brain exercise learning more rules and strategies and trying to reduce the houses odds. I could probably get hooked on just being in the casino atmosphere more so than the winning money aspect. Amapola is in Jaco Xman on the south end of town. |

Witling..... The Horseshoe has changed their rules regarding their "matchplay" coupons, several times since they have started giving them out. The latest rules (and for about a year) are that you cannot double down or split for the extra value associated with the coupon. (which has a maximum of $25) Example: You bet $25 plus the coupon and double down and win.... You get back your original $25..the $25 that you doubled down with,and the $50 associated with those bets. You also get a total of an additional $25 for the matchplay.... Total return on the $50 of bets is $125. Another more complicated result is if you split a pair when you have bet yor machplay. The coupon is placed with the first of the split hands and the monetary equvalant is determined by the reult of the first hand ONLY. So the bottom line is that the matchplay is really a $12.50 play if maxed out with $25. You either wind up with $25 or nothing depending on the result. You can get a different rule from different pit people since they aren't the most accurate people around,but that's the house rule. I hope that clears ir up for you. |

Sorry to mix subjects, but that Hold em tournament at the Amapola is March 21st at 8pm. I think it is a $50 buy in with maybe one more $50 buy. Says a guaranteed prize of $4000. |

Thirdworld, Glad to hear you had fun and took the time to learn basic strategy. I really enjoy blackjack. Learned basic strategy years ago and found that I could get a lot of entertainment for a few dollars playing low stakes tables. My last trip to San Jose, about 2 weeks ago, thought I would play a little blackjack in the Horseshoe, but was concerned about offending other players since I could only remember about 90% of basic strategy. Watched a little and realized I little to worry about. It is amazing how many people were playing and had no idea of the basics. They seemed to be surprised that they were losing, but they were doing just about everything wrong. Oh well, to each their own, hopefully they were having fun. Enjoyed myself and will polish up on basic strategy (along with spanish) before my next trip. |

I've played blackjack in Vegas, Reno, California, Atlantic City, Iowa, New Orleans, Mississippi, North Carolina, Panama, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Costa Rica, online and on cruises. I can tell you without reservation that anyone who knows how to use Basic Strategy will instantly be in the top 10% of all blackjack players. I've heard every possible rationalization for some of the plays I've seen people make. Some have even refused to look at a strategy card with the response, "You know who puts those out, right?" It is an amazing phenomenon. Trust Basic Stategy, learn the "Illustrious 18" and the "Senseless 7" misplayed hands and you'll almost be an expert.
