But, if you need perio work done, use the first link provided by Jazz. That's the Board that certifies periodontists internationally. A two year residency in an accredited school/hospital is required after getting a Dental Doctorate (DDS) in order to sit for their oral and written certification exam. There are no accredited periodontal schools/programs in Central America.
I was surprised to see that there were five Board Certified Perio's in SJ. They are in high demand in N America. That narrowed my search last year and she wasn't much more expensive then what the non board certified dentist doing perio wanted for what I needed done--what they call "deep cleaning" to clean the gum disease below my gum line. No fun, tedious and time consuming oral surgery. I highly recommend getting a doc from the first link. Lucky to have 5 in SJ I'd say. About 75% cheaper then my Perio wanted in the states.
Pain control is an issue to discuss with him or her. Mine gave me as much novocaine as I needed when I needed it. In the states, they charge you extra for each pain injection. Not in CR--she shot me up every time I said "ouch" and the set price was the set price.
And in the states, they only want to do one quarter of your teeth per surgery "because of the stress" which means four bad days and not two bad days. I say screw that, I can take it, let's get er done. I got it done in SJ in 2 bad days, about 6 hours each.
The second list Jazz cites includes dental offices in CR that offer perio work. Formal training/board certification in perio is not required for a dentist to do perio work in CR and so that's what you are getting at those places. In the states or Canada, they are required to refer you to a board certified periodontist. That is not the "standard of care" in CR.
In CR, they'll bring in a perio doc for you but he won't be board certified, though he may be good? That includes Smile Clinic 90210 Dental Team who advertises very heavily on this board, who for perio uses Dr Mauricio Bricenio who trained at a perio's office for a few months in Florida according to his resume on line; and at the office I recommended for cosmetic/veneers, Dr Cavellini's office--they also bring in a doc but I forgot who once I canned that idea of using them for perio.
If perio is what you need, go to one of the board certified doc's in SJ linked in Jazz' post. A no brainer--it's a specialized field of dental surgery--and in SJ roughly the same cost. And all the board certified perio's in SJ were trained in the US or Canada, mine at Stanford, so English is not an issue.
Thxs for the info...still trying to find someone who has had veneers placed on their teeth and their thoughts on the overall quality of the dentist - experience....
