I really wanted to go and Puravidatransport posted a ticket site a month ago, seats were still avail. Then I started thinking.
#1: Getting there and getting home--a big big traffic mess at the Stadium, no parking, etc. The stadium is in LaSabanna, a huge city park--it was the Int'l airport decades earlier--and it is a known bottleneck even under normal conditions. Rt 1 and Rt 27, the biggest inlets into SJ both end at two of the park perimeters and all that traffic is manuevering to get onto Paseo Colon, the main drag to get into town. It's always a friggin traffic mess other then low peak time
So knowing that, I predicted that I would probably would have to walk a half mile after exiting from a "going no where soon" stuck in traffic taxi. That is as close as you are going to get if you arrive an hour before kick off or whatever they call it. And then the same when leaving. CR let the Chinese build them the "Vagina" as some locals call the National Stadium because of how it looks from an airplane, but no parking area? None. Very condensed office /commercial/restaurant area on all of the logical "can I park here?" fringes.
Isn't that the most mui Tico of all the mui Tico things you have ever seen?? Everyone is supposed to walk at least a half mile to get in?? Word to the wise if you are definitely going--check in to Aparthotel Hotel LaSabanna or Hotel Christina--both very nice places with a mini kitchen for your beer and coffee--**but no girls other then who you check in with-- wink wink**one of us screwed that up a few years ago-- for game night for $60. Check in at 2pm. You can park there and walk to the Vagina and avoid all the baloney of getting to the game.
The runner up for goofy tico non sense would be that the Chinese didn't teach Ticos how the electric worked at the Vagina, or if they tried nobody took notes. They keep getting black outs during events.
#2 Have you ever been around Ticos when CR is playing the US? One time I watched a match on TV in a middle classs Tico bar frequented by our embassy and attache guys but probably 90% middle class Ticos in Rohmoser. Very nice cool place. That's why we went there. It was a World Cup round. Was maybe 8-9 years ago or 12-13 years ago, not sure which cup, I think it ended 1-0 US. I'm pretty sure it was 3 cups ago and the game was in the US or in any event a neutral country, historians can correct me.
The staff and tio customers were absolutely zonkers, way way beyond how gringo's act during their NFL playoff games. We've all been in emotional public social situations. For example like when it was announced Bin Laden was dead. Times Square was on caffeine all night. It was like that when the CR players did something good or got close to a goal. That's the closest I can compare it to.
They were wild eyed, like the world hinged on this. And you couldn't get a drink except during the breaks, bartenders had no interest in anything other then the game, and then only after a yelling screaming contest with everyone else who was waiting. And this was a very nice place that ordinarily bent over backwards for customers. They just said Phuck this, the game is on. That's what I gathered.
And so I'm thinking do I really want to put myself in that environment at the stadium this Sept 5? You saw recently, in the last 4 or 5 weeks, in a major SAmerica country after a local game, they beheaded the ref for a bad call and put his head on a stake? Yes it is true, google it.
That's the fervor of futbol and latinos--got nothing else except for sports like alot of us gringos, but greatly magnified x100. I think that's a fair statement.
So I think I am I better off to watch it at Sportsmens or the joint next to the DR if I am in SJ or at the condo if I can get it.
And I think this one will be very much worse because of the "revenge the Snow Bowl" game we won in CO this spring.
As to who they hate more, at least in futbol, either us or Mexico, it's a toss up. I think us and it is very real. And it spills over. I don't think I want to be in the Vagina in the last period if we are winning by two.
To me, not worth the goofiness and hassle for my old lazy ass to get to and then the back from the game and also dealing with the loyal CR fans for 3 hours. And I have had Jets season tickets since Namath so I know how goofy we can get. I predict it may be way beyond that.
I'll be there all of Sept so I'll check to see if it will be broadcast on local TV. If not find a bar in Jaco with a dish. But I am Captain No Balls. My days are numbered so I ain't pushing anything. If I can predict a possible problem, my wisdom earned tells me don't do dat. And like the NFL, it's alot better on TV anyway, at least for me.
If any of you go, please post the experience. Maybe I'll be surprised.
