I copied this from a CR e-paper but I forgot which one, so I can't credit them, sorry to the publisher.

I've been to 6 of the 8 mentioned in the article below, didn't hit Ventanas or Cocalito, never made it that far south in CR.

I would add Playa Matapalo, about 20-25 minutes south of Quepos on Rt 34, small sign for the pueblo of Matapalo. Go into town and then drive around until you find your way to the beach a few miles. You can park under the palms. A few houses and 2 kind of dumpy hotels close by, but start walking south and you will not see any development. Maybe a few cows, occasionally I see a Tico fishing from shore. Magnificent, roaring, miles long--you could walk it 9 miles all the way passed Hatillo to Dominical, really deserted, and a very, very wild surf that I wouldn't swim in, one of my favorites for solitude. Any others that should be added?

Here's the article:

"Playa Arcos is definitely hidden, surrounded by hills and jungle within Marino Ballena National Park. The easiest access is from La Cusinga Eco-lodge which offers a trail from one of the hills.

Playa Ventanas located in the Southern Pacific region of the Osa Peninsula gets its name from the two sea caves that appear like windows. You can park on the farm of a local family for a few dollars.

Playa Barrigona is just north of Samara. Mel Gibson owns much of the surrounding jungle but the beach is open to the public.

Playa Carrillo Eight km south of Samara is very isolated. You will find only hammocks and pushcart vendors. Enjoy the peace and quiet!

Uvita 11 miles south of Dominical along Coastal Highway 34 means “Whale Tail” and this beach which is in the shape of a whale’s tail is only accessible during low tide.

Playa Cocalito is a short walk from Drake Bay and the perfect place to relax after crossing a suspension bridge to get there. Keep an eye out for monkeys and parrots!

Playa Ostional just north of Playa Nosara and the Boca Nosara is a rarely visited sea turtle nesting spot. You can see the turtles between August and November.

Papagayo Peninsula’s Playa Blanca and Playa Virador are on the property of the Four Seasons Hotel which is $1,000 per night! The catch is that all beaches in Costa Rica are public so if you are willing to make the hike you can enjoy them for free!"
