I guess I was right about Ms chinchilla changing her mind (assuming she had one in the first place) about having put so many people out of work. As I had reported here a couple of weeks ago,I just heard today that starting tomorrow, Sept 1st, the casinos will open at 11 am instead of 3pm. The info came thru a pitboss yesterday at the Colonial to a friend of mine. The strange thing is that he said they would ONLY be opening 3 tables at 11am. I'll get the full info tomorrow when I go into town.

I just spoke to a non-CRT friend of mine who is getting ready to return to the States after a short trip here.He has been here many times. He likes to gamble a little while he is here,but it doesn't take up too much of his time.

He made some interesting observations. First he said that with all the lights turned off and the casinos being closed,it was pretty depressing during the daytime. This was compounded by the serious reduction in numbers of Gringo tourists. He travels quite a bit to some of the better monger destinations so his observations are pretty good.

Vegas Bob;

Did your Non CRT friend make a observation that many Gringo tourists
shifted their trips to other monger destinations after tiring of costa rica?

I was down there in May and got more feedback later from others that the tourist numbers have been decimated.
If san jose numbers are down 30% then Jaco is down maybe 60%

i concur some of the gluch locations are depressing in the daytime.

if these tourists numbers keep up or the US economy gets much worse then if appears San Jose has way too much hotels/bars/casinos, etc.

The Colonial is open fully at 11am. The Horseshoe and the Fiesta casinos (SJ and Alauella) are doing the same.( closed from 5am to 11am) I assume the Clarion is opening early also.The DR has yet to open early.I asked Bob "why" last week and he said that he didn't know but would ask Chad who is the casino owner. My guess is that they haven't hired back all the people that they let go originally.

UPDATE........ it looks like my earlier update was wrong. The del Rey and the Horseshoe are still adhering to the 3pm opening for now. The Colonial and the Fiesta casinos are opening at 11am. I have heard from the casinos that the reason for the differences are that the new law is in a "proposed" state, but it is assumed that it will go through. Some casinos believe that it is OK to change now and oyhers are taking the more conservative approach. It's interesting to note that the more "in the gray area" places (DR and Horseshoe)are closing and the more conservative places like the Colonial are opening early now.
