2 newbies coming in on the 22 - 25 and staying in SJO. We are interested in fishing one of our days in CR. We would like to fish for dolphin (mahi) Can someone steer us in the right direction?

Send a PM to the resident CRT fishing guru Mucho Gusto. Sure he can give you a lot of info.

B-Hale,

Ask and you shall receive !

Since you're in on the 22nd, and out on the 25th, those are basically travel days. Which only leaves you the 23rd or 24th to fish. You are (minimum) 2 hours drive (each way) from the Pacific Coast. So even if you only wanted to do a 1/2 day of fishing, you will still need a full day with travel time, and a real long day if you decide to to a full day offshore.

Jaco would be your best bet. Plenty of boats and crews. Most of the hotels in SJO can book you a fishing trip to the coast. You can figure the cost to be an average of $300-500 for a 1/2 day offshore, and anywhere from $650 to 900 for a full day. This is the price for the boat / crew / tackle / snacks / bait. This does not include transportation to/from Jaco. And also, remember that a 15 % gratuity is customary for the crew. And every crew I've ever fished with have done everything possible to put you on fish.

But the good thing, is that the dolphin (dorado, mahi) are chewing this time of year. And you also stand a good chance of catching tuna, wahoo, sailfish and if you're lucky, a nice blue or striped marlin. The skirts, baits and tackle they use for mahi will also raise these other species into your spread.

Good luck, have fun and bring plenty of sun-screen (spf 30+).

MG

I am trying to organize a trip. Check the thread below for Pacific Fish Mid May. FFTW has also expressed interest.

Your short timetable probably means travel to location on friday and fishing Sat morn.

Keep in touch.

can you get to Jaco or Quepos Friday night, 22 May ? the boats leave the dock around 7:15 am every morning. Saturday works best for me since I depart CR on Monday am. I need to return to SJO on Sunday.

per the other thread, the boat will be $800-900 for all day offshore.

i have the names of the charters from previous successful trips out of both places and will start with them.
