I always rent a car when I leave SJ for country touring. It provides wonderful flexibility and enjoyment. That said, the mountain hairpin curves and unpredictable drivers make defensive driving a must.

Also, when you rent your car use your credit card to secure the rental. DO NOT USE A DEBIT CARD. In September I met a young couple who used a debit card at Advantage. When their car was wrecked (not their fault) Advantage cleaned out their debit card account within minutes. If you use a credit card, you have recourse.

Last year there was someone in escazu area doing rentals I believe it was a gringo that was giving good rates. He had a bunch of used cars in satisfactory shape. ID may have this guys number... I think he kind of runs it out of his house or its a small biz operation. I remember seeing his rates and they were half the rate of AVIS or whatever.
ID or Anyone remember this guy in Escazu? Its a place to start.
I just have a driver so I can drink beers and relax so I dont rent since I want to drink on vacation. But if you are on a long vacation I can see it.

Think this might be the post.

....Lately, I have been renting from Andy who has advertised in the Tico Times. He is a gringo and has some decent cars for $120 per week and up. Have been trying to call him for my Sept 10 trip....but have only gotten his answering machine. Something may have changed there. As with everything in CR, car renting comes at some risk. So far, for me, it has been well worth it

His ad is still in the Tico Times every week and the phone number is 2282-7013. He lists the rate as $135 to 195 per week. There is also another guy who advertises every week. crjimmy@hotmail.com,2228-5827 8825-9694 $125 to 175 weekly. I no nothing about either guy so proceed with caution.

Like the U.S. gas prices have fallen in Costa Rica. A gallon of plus (91 octane) is now just around $3.35 a gallon.

There are a number of places that will rent cars on the side. These cars are typically not in very good shape, but they'll usually get you there. You won't be impressing any chicas with them, that's for sure ;)

Be warned, though. You typically have to reserve your car at least 3-4 weeks ahead of time, or they just won't have any. I've tried a dozen different times to get cars last minute through those guys and it never works.
