I know it's $12.00 from Airport to the gulch. But how much should a cabbie charge to drive you back? It should also be $12, right? On one trip I was charged $17 by a guy that should have been more of a friend(I used his several times on the trip). On another I was charged $12. Yesterday someone acted like I owed him $15 when we got to the airport even though I believe it was clearly said I would pay $12.

Is there a custom of charging more than $12 for the return trip to the airport?

Every time the hotel arranges a cab for me back to the airport, it has always been in the $15-$16 range.

Always 12 bucks from the Presidente, although last trip I notice the sign in lobby said it's now 13.00.
I used a driver once of an amigo that shall remain nameless (Showerhead) and that bastard tried to charge me 25.00...

I only paid over $15 once and not by much, but it was during one of the protest blockades around SJ and he took me a round about route to get to the airport. He was on the cell the whole time to find out what routes were open. I was happy to get there via Heredia. I left very early and got a nice scenic trip.

I just went from the Prez to the airport yesterday and it was 12$ @ 5am if that makes any difference. I ended up giving him 15$ for the fun of it, and he seemed rather happy.

12 bucks, either way. If someone wants to charge you more, find another cabbie. (Similar to my tag line).

Remember, the meter is the driver's proof of fare and his protection, not yours. If the meter has no reading, your initial bargaining position is "I owe you nothing, sucker". To be ethical, remind him once or twice on the way to use the meter.
