Has anyone used this service? if so how much does it cost. is it easier then getting a cab

This would probably be the vans that are operated from the sportsmens. I think they are independant although display the Sportsmans logo. A cab to the airport is $12. Make sure they don't charge more.

They just emailed me and said it is $17 for a ride from the airport. should i just take the orange cab outside the airport. i f i remember it is only $13 bucks to san jose

Sorry, I thought you were talking to the airport from the SL. It's $12 from the airport and a regular cab will get you back to the airport for $12. The biggest reason I wouldn't take the SL shuttle is that you don't know for sure they'll show up on time. After you go through baggage/customs you buy a cab for $12 at the cab stand on the left before you go outside. You'll be in San Jose in no time.

No reason to pay $17.00. Just go to the taxi booth when you clear customs, prepay the $12.00 fare and you will be taken to the gulch in a clean well driven orange cab.

Yes, the SL van is a few bucks more but there are a few advantages if this is your first visit to San Jose and/or you don’t speak much Spanish.

If you do not have and/or can not communicate directions to the SL it could be a problem. I did not want to worry about that issue on my first trip, therefore found that the SL van and driver (Jimmy) were well worth the extra few bucks. Jimmy was right outside the customs exit, on time, with a SL sign with my name (misspelled…) on it. The scene outside the airport is a zoo, and it was nice to zip through that… Jimmy also took me on a short side trip to the Don Begino cigar factory so that I could stock up on some great local stogies. I’m smoking one as I type… :D

Jimmy also spoke great English and was a wealth of knowledge for a rookie…we took the scenic rout past the DR, KL, and ZB… I felt a lot more comfortable with visual recognition and got a feel for the surroundings.

On my next trip, now that I have a SL card with directions on the back...

And now that I have a feel for the scene at the airport (think, deer in the headlights :shock: …), I will use a $12 cab… The SL van is a service; therefore you do pay a premium… your call.

This is my second trip so i know abut the orange cabs but this is my stay at the SL. and i have no idea were it is exactly. mendobrew made a good point of having them bring him there and get the lay of the land with an english speaking driver. my spanish is not that good. so i think i'll use them this time. mendobrew do you remember if you paid or did the SL add it to your bill ?

Just have them find Castillo, Hemingway, Don Carlos and you're there. They all know where that stretch is. The thing you want to avoid is sitting around the airport waiting. Grab the orange cab and get it started without delay. :)

Just print out a copy of this map and give it to the taxista. Save yourself the $5.00 upcharge.

Listen to ding dong and by the way never use the cabs at the SL unless they use a meter. No meter, have them call a taxi for you, the guys that hangout with the taxi's at the SL are all overpriced.

question for the members living in costa Rica.....didn't the authorites recently allow for an increase in the taxi fees...?....increased cost of gasoline and the like may also explain price increases...

Even though cabs have been allowed an increase I am sure there will still be cabs at major hotels like Presidente, Sportsman Lodage and outhers that overcharge.Of course Del Rey is worst of all. Best bet is to flag a cab on the street and make sure they have a meter.rbc100

This increase was for the RED cabs. The ORANGE airport cabs still charge a flat rate based on destination so $12.00 will still get you from the airport to the gulch. There is simply no good reason to pay $17.00 unless that fee includes a HOT chica guide and some COLD Imperials. :lol:
