Post subject:  The road to Dominical

Has anyone heard whether the gravel road from Quepos to Dominical is scheduled to be paved anytime soon?

A better question is whether the gravel road even open again after the recent mudslides and restored to its previous rough condition. Several of the bridges were washed out. As for road IMPROVEMENTS and paving, this is CR. They've been talking about fixing or improving various stretches of roads in various parts of CR for years. Most haven't even started and of those that have progress is usually glacial in pace. Just look at how long it took to finish the road from Jaco to Quepos. And Dominical at the destination is nowher near the tourist attraction that Manuel Antonio is, so the economic pressure to complete it is nowhere near as great. When you hear reports that they've actually started work on that road than you will have several years advance noticewhen it will be complete.

The bridges for the Savagre and Portolon rivers were completely obliterated from the floods. 4WD vehicles are crossing on the river beds when the flow is low and slow, (kind of like it was back in the good old days). In general, the road betwen Quepos and Dominical is about as bad as it has ever been.

BTW, the CR government had determined that they would move the PanAM highway from the central mountains to the Costanera for upkeep reasons. I believe they may now be reconsidering.

Finally, the towns of Portolon and Silencio were destroyed by the rains and floods. Many familys have lost everything they owned. Any gentlemen wishing to help (shoes, clothing, blankets, etcetera) can contact Bob Klenz at (011 506) 817-3120.

Post subject:  Dominical in Jan

I'll be heading from Quepos to Dominical on Jan. 19th, so I suppose that even though the roads won't be great I'll still be able to make that trip.
Is that a correct assumption?

If you travel within a good 4WD you shouldn't have too many problems. I'll be there at about the same time.

Good Luck!
