Quick question,

I am going to buy my exit stamp when I arrive in SJO so that will be taken care of, I was wondering however how much time I should allow when I arrive at the airport to return to the US? 2 hours sufficiant?

Thanks!

Mabo.....buy you exit Tax stamp at the airport while you are waiting line at immigration. It will be the kiosk in the corner in the back. $26 dollars and you're all set. Just put it in a safe place and then proceed thru immigration and then downstairs to baggage claim, then breeze thru customs and get a taxi to SJ.

Have a great time!

Pura Vida!

Tuesday, 1:43 p.m. departure? Sounds like it might be the American Airlines Flight # 972 to Miami. 2 hours should give you more than enough time, especially since you'll already have your 'Departure Tax' paid for in advance. And GG's right. Get your EXIT TAX stamp while you wait for immigration. It'll save you time on the back side. Have a great trip.

All I can say is that I didn't buy my exit stamp upon arrival. The 2 times (both within the last 6 months) that I did leave SJO I just walked up to the exit stamp counter and my wait was no more than 5 minutes, if even that. I don't know why people make such a big deal about getting that done as soon as you arrive in SJO.

Piroca,
Sometimes it's not a big deal. 5 minutes, and you're outa there. But there are some months, some days, at certain times of the day, where the line to pay your departure tax can be out the door, down the sidewalk, and over an hour long.

Obviously, the 2 times that you departed SJ, you hit the airport at a good time of day. But, many of us, who fly to CR 6 - 8 times per year, have learned, and know better. I've flown in/out of CR 10 times in the past 14 months, and at least half of my trips, that line was a mile long, and I was very happy that I took the extra 5 minutes (upon arrival) to pay that tax instead of waiting. YMMV.

And, although it is not necessary to get this menial task out of the way upon arrival, it is CERTAINLY necessary to pay it at some point between the time you arrive and the time you depart. So, why take a chance? By doing it upon arrival, it's quick, painless, and one less thing to worry about when you're draggin' ass after a few days of drinking, mongering and suffering from sleep depravation.

But, if you're a gambling man......what the hell......take a chance !!!
