Post subject:  Hotel Amon open or closed?

This appeared in InsideCostaRica this morning:

Quote:
However, the downtown hotel Amón Plaza, who is now managed by Clarion Hotels, was not so lucky, when Tuesday CCSS agents in charge of closures took the yellow tape to the business for unpaid dues to the Caja.

The hotel, according to the Caja, owes ¢148.000.000 colones (us$343.500 dollars) that goes back for the last two years, when another hotel chain managed the property and left it's current investors with the debt.

Hotel owners say that they were aware of the debt accumulated by the former operator and have made efforts to pay down the debt, paying down ¢79.000.000 of what is owed, of which ¢29.000.000 colones was paid last month.

The hotel owners says that, unlike the others, they have shown a willingness to pay.

Does anyone know if the hotel is open?

Post subject:  I'd like to know too...

Just read your post & saw it online at insidecostarica. I had thought about using this hotel until checking with the website a while back. Jeez, the cheapest room with tax is $147 a night. Guess we get 10% off, but is still mighty pricey. Has anyone noticed that the Amon seems to charge 23% CR taxes when others charge 16%? And, it appears that they apply a mandatory $1 a day maid fee and $2 a day bell boy fee. I always leave the maids something around that amount, but irritates me that it would be mandated. Never have a seen a "bell boy fee."

THe hotel is open...2 of our VIPs checked in yesterday. DONT book online with the hotel. Book with the CRT discount direct with the casino. Current rate with CRT discount, $65 per night one person.

These "closings" happen every once in a while to shake down businesses to pay up their taxes. The are usually temporary closings. It is somewhat known that the Amon Plaza has some financial difficulties. Yet, I think your reservations are safe there, but it never hurts to have a backup plan...

Hoserack and I are there it is very open.

The $65 rate plus $10 to share a room is reasonable and includes a great breakfast (better than Prez in my opinion). The pool/spa in back is pretty cool I'd pick Ammon as my back-up over Delray which is full constantly now it seems. Morazon is okay but smoky from the casino and still close to the negative aspects of the gulch.
