My buddy and I just wrapped up a great trip to CR with a 2-night stay at the Sportsmens Lodge in Barrio Otoya. We arrived on May 5th after a 2-day journey to Puerto Viejo. This was my friend's first trip to CR, and he was not thrilled with the prospect of returning to SJ after spending the first 4 nights in a respected hotel situated in the gulch. I tried to explain to him that Sportsmens was a different type of experience...one that he would enjoy...to help allay his concerns. (I stumbled onto the SL during a trip in January.) When we departed on Saturday morning, my buddy vowed that he would, indeed, return to SJ and the Sportsmens Lodge.

A lot has already been said in previous posts about this little hotel's class, the exceptional service and tasteful, well-appointed rooms and numerous other creature conforts. Based upon my personal experience, I can say that all of this is true. The tranquil neighborhood of Barrio Otoya is an ideal setting for those of us who wish to escape the noise and commotion of the gulch. In my travels around the world, and with few exceptions, I have never found the level of genuine hospitality offered by Bill Alexander and his crew.

Apparently, SL is not only a magnet for attracting male sportsmen and adventurers. It seems that the word is out...the SL is now attracting outstanding local talent, too! I was delighted to find a bevy of 12 - 15 beauties gracing the Sportsmens bar on Thursday and Friday evenings. Most were knockouts...and all had class! The low-key, laid-back atmosphere of the lodge and close proximity of the rooms are perfect for getting to know one or more of these ladies on intimate terms. No room upgrades or fees are applied to your bill should you decide to invite one of them back to your room. I was astonished by the lack of gentlemen available to entertain these pretty senoritas...I guess the first team was somewhere in the gulch!

Maybe the expansion project will enable Bill to figure out how to add some music into the nightlife mix without waking up those guests who wish to sleep. I wish him good luck and success with his plans to expand his top-shelf operation...and like my buddy...I shall return, too!

Very encouraging, but a little scary too. And definitely not the case when I was there in February. Scary only because I do want to be able to leave the hotel and go elsewhere at least part of the next trip...

I'll be there Thursday night to conFIRM your report. I must say that so far the staff there has been most helpful to me and I'm not even there yet!
