A US green card shows you are a legal resident of the US. It doesn't identify your citizenship and it doesn't really mean anything to another country.

You didn't say what country your passport is from. That would make it easier to answer your questions. First I would suggest you use the internet to find out which countries Costa Rica require to have visas.

But that might not make any difference since Costa Rica requires all passports to have 6 months remaining until expiration.

From this link:
http://www.languagecourse.net/visa/costa_rica.php3
Required documents for visa:
(a) Completed application form.
(b) 2 passport-size photos.
(c) Passport valid for 6 months at time of entry.
(d) Proof of sufficient funds to cover duration of stay.
(e) Return or onward ticket.

If you have a greencard, then you can't have a US passport.

What kind of passport do you have? Do a search online to see if you need a VISA.

You will need to get a new passport before you leave, most countries require your passport to be good for at least another 6 months. Better hurry they can take a month. Contact your embassy or consulate immediatly.

Here's a site where you can check if you need a visa: http://www.delta.com/travel/plan/international_travel/visa_passport_info/index.jsp

Post subject:  Visa or green card.

Alexalex:
When you say Visa and green card are you talking about government documents are you talking about credit cards. If you talking about government documents the only thing you need to get into Costa Rica is your passport. If you're talking about credit cards. And American Express green card would not be excepted by most hotels. The credit cards they prefer is a Visa. If you have an American Express green card you should have no problem getting a Visa card. If I have misunderstood just right it up as old age.

If you get a re-entry permit from the USA, you can enter CR on a Green Card.
