Does anyone have suggestions for "standard" hotels in San Jose where I won't encounter trouble with getting chicas back to my room?

Also, any thoughts if it would make a difference on how you approach the situation? For instance, if I meet her a block away from the hotel, and walk back to the entrance with her arm around my shoulder, is security at the door going to assume she's "with me" once I show my ID? Or is walking hand and hand like that not going to fool the hotel staff into thinking she's my significant other?

Lots of info in various posts about which ones are chica friendly. For the hotels that are not almost certain your plan will not work. If you were close in age, and you were talking to her in fluent Spanish as you walked by, perhaps. As long as you had a Costa Rican accent with your Spanish. No, they see any gringo with any female under 100 and they know the game.

You may get away with it as some guards may not want to challenge a paying guest who brazenly does that. But most of the time they will direct you to the desk where your visitor will either result in you paying whatever their fee is, or they will just tell you it is not allowed. And everywhere it is allowed you always have to go to the desk where she will leave her id then go with you to the room.

I read some of the recent posts, and didn't see any names of specific other hotels listed. There was one about the Hilton, but no claim to validity. Could I get some specific names of hotels please?

As for the "sneak tactic", I don't look Hispanic, but I'm only in my late 30s and have been told I look younger. Also, I can speak Spanish with an accent. I don't know if it's worth a shot or not, but I'd rather go to a hotel where I don't have to "test" the theory.

There are many many posts about hotels like Sportsmens Lodge, Castillo, Taormina, where they are allowed. But if you are looking for others as you say "non gulch" hotels there are none that anyone can say are chica friendly.

If you do decide to stay in a "non-gulch" hotel be sure to email them to get written confirmation of their guest policy and make sure it is available to show them if you are challenged. I would not count on anything if it's not in writing. Someone might have been successful sneaking someone to their room but the security guy or front desk folks might not have been paying attention or didn't want to be bothered at that particular moment.

And even if they do allow guests, I really don't know if I would want to be seen bringing a hooker into a business or eco-tourist hotel. It's on me, but I am still a little uncomfortable doing that.

If the reason you are avoiding the gulch hotels is because of traveling companions or work expense reports, I would just take advantage of the many short time motels in the area.

I recomend Barcelo hotel The hotel is nice, beautiful grounds, nice pool and great breakfast included. I was bringing in different chicas every day. The front desk even called me to tell me I had a young lady waiting on me! This was last July. On weekends a nice live band playing in the large bar Rooms under $100

I like your suggestion about getting something in writing from the hotel. Most of the indications I've gotten about these gulch hotels are that they are extremely noisy making it hard to sleep at night, not well maintained, and frankly the quality of women standing around most of these places is not all that great, as they tend to be on the older and heavier side.

I think I'm on the exact opposite end of the spectrum with my concept of hotels. I'd rather not be seen at a hotel where the clientele are often referred to as a bunch of rowdy old fat men with thick beards and no manners. I am a single guy, so I think the worst thing that happens to me if I'm seen taking a courtesan back to my room is that some elderly senorita walks up to me and attempts to scold me for violating her Catholic ethos. I don't have a wife to worry about, I don't have any business partners to worry about, I'm just me.

I haven't been to Costa Rica before, but when I was in the Mediterranean no one had an issue with me bringing providers back to my room. But then again the situation with crime was not so sketchy that they had security guards outside of the doors. But I don't want to hop on a plane for another 10+ hour flight again, I'd rather do this much closer to home. Do you think that the local hotels rather than the chains, that don't really cater to form tourists , might be more inclined to turn a blind eye? I don't care whether the front desk speaks English or not, I just haven't been thrilled by any of the reviews of the gulch hotels.

Check the "house rules" section on the Airbnb listing. Often it will have something there about guests. I have looked at most of the listings in the San Jose city area and almost all do NOT allow guests, or have statements about sexual tourism, etc. In one downtown condo with many Airbnb listings it is not always written clearly, but the condo association has it's own rules as well. So check with the host before completing booking. If you find one that says yes, guests are ok, bingo.

I don't think you will fare much better with the local hotels. If you are dead set against the gulch hotels then I would research some of the short time hotels close to where you are staying or close to where you are searching for company. They generally aren't too expensive and some are really pretty decent. I have only used La Oficina. It isn't too far from the Taormina.

If you are looking for a "somewhat" normal hotel, you might want to check out the Taormina Hotel and Casino. It is relatively guest friendly in that they charge you a small fee to bring a woman up to your room but no hassles. The bar there is a decent place to meet company. The rooms are more modern that the Sportsmens or the Castillo and all about the same. Included breakfast is decent and unless you are bringing back multiple women per day, even with the chica fee it works out cheaper than most rooms at the Castillo or the Sportsmens. The rooms kind of remind me of an older Courtyard or Hilton Garden Inn. Get a room on the 4th floor and you shouldn't have too much trouble with noise. They do get a mix between regular tourists and monger types though I am sure you will still see quite a few old, bearded, fat men :-). Be sure to book for two people, it generally isn't any more expensive.

The Taormina is the last place I would recommend anyone stay. I have had numerous issues there over the years with everything from their jackass security guards to finding cockroaches crawling all over the rooms. I know others have had issues there also. The crowd there is definitely more of the ghetto type too and that area right outside the hotel might be the worst in all of downtown San Jose.

I have to agree with this description but the lien boys do need a headquarters and what you describe here is what they need to compliment their lifestyle. I stayed there once years ago. In the room for 15 minutes and the towel bar fell off the wall and woke the roaches. Beware.

I have stayed at the Taormina 3 times pre covid and twice since things opened back up, the last time about two months ago. While I agree that there security guards can be a bit over the top, I have never had a bad stay there. Maybe I was lucky but I found the rooms to be decent sized, good sized window, good water pressure, plenty of hot water, well maintained and clean. Can't remember seeing any cucarachas but it is the tropics so YMMV. The free breakfast was good and the bar food is decent.

Though I much prefer the SL and the Castillo I won't stay at either if I can't get a decent room. And the are quite a few rooms at both hotels I find unacceptable for longer than a one or two night stay. Both are very small hotels and if you book at the last minute your room choices are very limited. When this happens I usually stay at the Taormina.

My biggest complaint is the Sports Bar. While it is a great place to meet chicas, the music is generally so loud that it can be almost impossible to try to hold a conversation. Unfortunately the SL is moving this way too on the nights they have a DJ. At the Taormina drink prices are high and pricing can be inconsistent.

If in doubt, book a room for one night and if it doesn't suit your needs, move elsewhere

What's the deal with traditional hotels not wanting girls being invited back? They are afraid it's going to scare off the families of 5 going down there to tour the rain forests? It's the assumption that ticas lead to drugs, and drugs lead to crime?
