First, I want to express my deep appreciation to Bill Alexander, his lovely novia Karina, Ray and Wanda behind the front desk, the wonderful bartenders - warm and friendly Margie, mischievous Heidi, vivacious Patricia, and of course, the beautiful and sweet Violeta (my fav) - and the entire maintenance and service staff for making my stay there completely enjoyable and memorable.

The hotel is a beautiful older building with great character, rooms are comfortable and well-appointed, and the courtyard and bar area are lovely and very comfortable to hang out in. Moreover, Bill is a great host who will go out of his way to meet your needs. The place is also becoming more popular with the local working girls - saving you the hassle of a trip to the Blue Marlin if so inclined (more details in my upcoming trip report).

Nowhere is perfect of course, and in the interests of full disclosure I will mention a couple of things. I wouldn't want them to change a thing about the courtyard, however, with all the hard surfaces, sound is amplified, and can be a little intrusive when trying to catch a midday nap in your room. Also, the hotel remains largely unknown to most of the chicas and taxi drivers, and if you come back after the bar has closed up, it may look a little dark and forbidding to them. If private sessions with Blue Marlin girls are your primary objective, this may not be your best option.

But these quibbles pale in comparison to the numerous positives. How many places that you've ever stayed at make you feel like you have a home away from home? This is that kind of place.

By the way, loved the food too - I had every meal except one right there at the hotel.

So, do they only serve a continental breakfast there? I would love to be able to find somewhere besides the Pres to eat breakfast...not that I don't like the Pres....just kind of expensive. But I go there anyway just to watch the latin world walk by.

The continental breakfast is free, but you can order other standard stuff - bacon and eggs, etc. - if you need something more substantial.

Does The Sportsmen`s Lodge have lock-up boxes and airconditioners in each room?

I've stayed there twice in the last two months. Its a great place to stay in so many ways but no a/c and you will have to lock your valuables at the front desk. 3P

Don't let the lack of AC discourage you. I am very hot natured and have never been hot when staying at the Sportsmen's. With the ceiling fan on I am always under the covers. Security there is great also. GetRythm, I just saw a photo of you with two of the bartenders. Saw you there last weekend. Don;t think we ever talked, but now can put a face with the name. Pura vida.

...with four other guys. We need the best available hotel since the Presidente is not available. Is the Sportsman our best bet to be close to the Delrey and Key Largo? Are they chica friendly?

Sportsman very chica friendly. Not that far from DR certainly within walking distance. KL opens about 10 PM you need to take a cab at night for safety, just a few bucks.
Lots of other hotel choices if Sportsman full, check previous posts. Good Luck.

Actually it's 500 colones to/from the Sportmens/Gulch (about $1.20?) - including a tip. Anyone charges you more they're ripping you off.
