Taormina 4th floor had an after hours dance club during COVID, it closed at 4am, and you had to get in before 11PM. Is that still happening now? If so, is it more locals with the 150dB level music? Are they playing American stuff or latin? How about the Del Rey?

I love the energy of a dance club but dont get the music levels...you scream in a chicas ear and she still cant hear you.

They closed that once all of the Covid restrictions were lifted. The Sports Bar and Casino are both open very late / early am.

Never understood the Taormina, where the girls are not allowed into the huge casino unescorted. They pack em all into the little bar area. EVery time Ive been there, the bar is packed and the casino empty.

They have so much floor space, they could make that bar 5x the size, stick a DJ and dance floor in there, make it happening. So easy to do. What a waste.

When (or IF) regular business travel/tourism returns, I predict the Taormina will return to its prior business stance (Monger agnostic/skeptic) and gently nudge the p4p traffic back to the HDR which has ample space but few customers.

They don't want to remodel the Clarion.

Slot machines are a lot more profitable than gringos nursing beers.

+1

Which is also why they play music few gringos want to hear at a volume none of them can stand. The bar and the chicas want you to quickly order your drink, order a chica or two an overpriced cocktail, complete a hasty $150+ negotiation where the chica can always claim a misunderstanding, and free up the table for the next target.

That's the Tourist Monger Game.
Still better here than in the USA.

I have heard that Taormina is planning to build a roof bar and/or pool. no idea if true or not or when.

Only after they put a miniature golf park down to the river and toward the bridge.

Ive been to Taormina like 4-6 times, and every time the casino is empty, completely. Maybe I'm hitting it on the wrong night? If they got a simple DJ with american dance music and got people spending some time in there the bar would make a fortune in drinks. Make it a scene, so easy and cheap. You build a wall, get some local to decorate it, stick in a bar and tables around the dance floor and off you go. Much cheaper than a roof bar with a pool.
Plus you still have plenty of casino room.

Before it became a hooker bar, the casino and poker rooms were big draws for locals and business travelers and Latin American tourists. The sports bar was the emptiest space in the hotel. A rooftop bar and pool would enhance that and provide an investment write off.

In August, 406,000 passengers came through SJO. This in 95% of the pre-pandemic level. Businesses are betting that travel and tourism dollars will also rebound.
