Post subject:  Raid at DR?
Just got off the phone with a buddy who has a favorita in DR. On their phone conversation last night, she told him the policia raided the DR recently (no specific day was given, but it must have been within the last two weeks). Said they took about 20-25 chicas away during the raid... any facts on what happened, and if the arresting of chicas is a fact, why were they taken?

I ask for peace of mind... I am going again next week and want to know if there is something going on in DR that I need to be worried or conscious about.

They run these I would say 1 time of year and it always seems to be in Late February or March, I have no idea why. They are simply looking for illegals, which they have every right to do. Mind your P's & Q's and carry the approriate documentation and you will or should never have a problem.

IT IS DEFINITELY Business as Usual....

Thanks for the quick repsonse, that sure gives for a sigh a relief. As long as the raid had nothing to do with the sport of mongering itself or related to any illegal activity in DR, I guess everything is business as usual then...

I have heard that they have given gringos a hard time if they don't have their actual passport with them. I used to carry a color copy, but now usually carry the real thing, just in case.

I personally have been at the DR during two raids. Both looking for illegal gals. Both times the migration police did not even bother to question one single Gringo but were there strictly for the ladies.

It has been pointed out that often the Ticas themselves make the complaints to the migration department to eliminate the competition of the girls who do not belong there. (This is not confirmed just what is seen and heard).

Again, Carry Proper Documentation and you will be JUST FINE!

About a year and a half ago, I was at the BM one night when they had a raid, and I didn't even realize it! I was sitting at a lower level table on the Monkey Bar side, next to the windows and door. It was around 11:00 and the place was quite busy as usual. I gradually realized that the place had really cleared out. Then I noticed that the door was locked, with a chain across it. I figured that everyone had gone over to the KL. After about
30 minutes, it started to get busy again. Turns out it was a raid and I
didn't even realize it! They must have been taking the chicas out the
door on the KL side.

I definitely concur with Admin 1 that the Ticas do complain to Immigration
about the illegals at the BM. Actually, I don't blame them. Without
competition from the Colombianas and Nicas, their services would be much more in demand and they could perhaps command higher prices.

I could have sworn I read a post about someone who was given a hard time for having a copy of their passport instead of the real thing....

Anyone know anything here?

While the requirement to carry your passport was and is the law the government in January issued a decree that they would accept photo copies of your ID page and arrival stamp page. This was done at the request of the US and other countries do to the high incidence of passport theft.
The immigration police will accept a photocopy but retain the right to take you back to your hotel and view the original.
As stated in previous post the raids are aimed at girls who are illegally in the country not tourists who are at the BM to monger.

Yes, we had a long discussion on this board about a year ago. Not sure if the thread is still here or not.

DD is correct that you no longer require to carry the original passport. The US embassy in San Jose had requested the CR government to relax on their passport rules after many US citizens reported their passport being stolen.

NO matter what the rules are, most of the policia have no clue about recent rule changes. They can still hassle you if you dont have your passport, though they will hardly ever drag you away anywhere. Just remember, it's their country and they think they have the right to do anything they want with you. Normally though they will just ignore you...unless you're drunk and disorderlie...or your name is EASY 8) .

Friday night WAS an organized raid night...I was with a CRT buddy at Kamur...and about 10:30 in came 12-15 officials and police doing their periodic shakedown. They didnt talk to ONE gringo (good thing, cause my bud didnt have his passport or ANY ID on him...I was imagining myself trying to keep him out of the pokey :x ), but they did immediately go after the girls for IDs checking status and age. I happened to know the "health inspection" officer in the group of officials who was explaining to me this is a periodic thing and no big deal. Kind of a running game if you will. Unfortunately for the club, they shut down for the night the male strip club downstairs because there were no "permits" for that other type of entertainment. I feel bad for the owner as things are just starting to go better at the club when these shakedowns happen. I'm assuming this week its business as normal there after probably paying for another license and "penalty fees"...all the price of doing biz in Latin America. Love it or hate it...but it's the reality of doing biz down here.

I call it "poetry in motion"...but I'm sure the owners have other words for it... :twisted:

I have been at the Del Rey twice during these immigration raids, and have never been questioned for my passport or papers, I didn't stick my nose in thier business. However, I did not see any problems, I walked into the bar and watched it go down on national television. I did notice that two of the owners were working late at the time....
