I recently stayed in a King room, "oficina" is its nickname, it has no official name or number on the door. From the bar / restaurant, facing the rooms, making a right turn it is the last room on the left side all the way down the hall past an open "office" area (hence its nickname, I think).
It was doable for a couple days but I was glad to leave. The bed was comfortable but the pillows were completely flat and smelled bad (I had to wrap them in towels). Bathroom and shower were fine.
What really irked me was that there was no wi-fi in my room. I brought this up to both guys at the desk (not sure which was Darren) but there was nothing they could do. The website (
https://hotelcastillocostarica.com/rooms-rates/) clearly says "
Rooms are also equipped with...
Wi-Fi Internet" (see screenshot
https://ibb.co/yPBt06D). I will never stay there again because of this.
The room had a big desk, but the wall outlets by the desk didn't work so I had to rearrange the furniture so I could plug in my laptop and use the desk at the same time. Without wi-fi though I spent most of my time outside my room in the "office" area or in the restaurant / bar area where the wi-fi worked.
Most of the food was mediocre, but for just an extra $10 on the fee it was worthwhile. The filet mignon was my favorite dish.
I stayed at the Taormina Hotel and Casino for a night as well and I liked it much more. It had a lot more chicas, the bedding was of higher quality, and no internet issues. It had no desk though, contrary to the picture on hotels.com. The Italian restaurant connected to the hotel was decent for the price. When I checked out I was charged $10 for the chica I brought back to my room the night before. Taormina also took the chica's ID before she went back to my room. This didn't happen in Castillo for me with two different chicas which to me is a bit of a security risk.
If I visit San Jose again, it's definitely going to be Taormina and not Castillo (even with no chica fees at Castillo).
