Not optimal, but doable. The hdr elevator fee was, think $12., which was worse.

I stayed there in early March before the shutdowns. Registered my main girl as a guest so there were no additional charges for her. My other main girl came over twice but I was only charged once and paid $10 at checkout
in cash. I have a couple of other girls I normaly see but it was a 2 night trip. I wouldn't let a small guest fee stop me from staying there but I rotate around the Gulch hotels. Next up ot Sportsmans and then Castillio.

I just remembered my March trip I reserved a room through Booking.com for $62 a night. Apon arrival they offered me a $50 a night cash price, so I paid in cash on the spot. You might ask about a cash discount and try to save some bucks.

I stayed there this past weekend.
I paid $70/night including tax and Continental breakfast (you can pay $6 more in the restaurant for a full breakfast). I was not charged a guest fee.
With the Del Rey being closed, there is more activity now than in the past. The bar opens at 2:00 pm and there was potential action right from opening time which I've never seen in the past. As with all bars in Costa Rica right now, per the Covid rules the bar closes at 10:00 pm M - F, 9:00 pm Sat - Sun. So, it means earlier nights, but milder hangovers! Also per the Covid rules nobody can sit at the bar so if you want to run a tab you have to be seated at a table or on the couches.
Rum & coke with Flor de Caña 7 year: 2800 colones (~$4.60) incl tax & 10% service. Not bad for current day prices for 7 year Flor de Caña.
It's looking like at least for the moment the Taormina is a scaled down verson of the Del Rey.
Sportmans:
On a side note, the Sportsman's got pretty creative about the "no bar seating" rule and put male/female dressed mannequins on the bar stools. Pretty comical. At first glance I thought it was real people sitting at the bar. It took a double take to realize they were just mannequins. On Sunday the back bar was full of guys watching the NFL games, probably a mix of hotel stayers and local expats.

Is the casino part open? Specifically the poker room.

Casino is open. More space between tables & lots of plexiglass. Can't say for sure but I would guess no poker.

Do yourself as favor and stay at Castillo with the All Inclusive package. You will save money and be very happy.

Thanks, I'll look into that. Curious though as to how the rooms at Taomino compare to the SL? I've booked a night at both (different days)

Rooms at Sportsman's are all different in that it was created from several mansions divided into rooms and the layouts of each reflect this. The Taormina is more on the line of a several story US hotel with most of the rooms having the same layout. Bath area just inside the entry door, spacious bedroom and lounging areas all with large windows at the far end.
