You can pay with US dollars almost everywhere you go but realize with the exchange rate at 613 colones to 1 dollar you are probably going to take a bath on almost every transaction. You will usually get closer to 500 than 600 in most casual transactions. Many women in Jaco, except for the most mathematically inclined, that ask for $100 will gladly except 50K colones. Seldom will restaurants and bars will give a good exchange rate. You are much better off paying in the local currency for everything unless it is priced in US dollars like some hotels that cater to gringos. If you were arriving earlier I would suggest using the bank in the Departures area of the airport to convert some dollars but I would expect that at 9pm or so they would be closed (maybe not even open at all due to Covid). Use an ATM at the airport. If you are a US resident and have time, get a Charles Schwab ATM card. All ATM fees are reimbursed and they usually have very good exchange rates. It does require opening a brokerage account but you don't have to trade anything. |
