Need a "nice" hotel in Amon district. My daughter & boyfriend will be with me and I need a room for them just prior to leaving SJ. I myself always stay in SL but I'd like a hotel in Amon area that is not "blatantly" monger type. I know about Taomina or whatever it's now called (formerly Amon Plaza) but wondering if any of the other hotels in the area are nicer as far as "comfort" etc. $$$ is not a concern. Just want the nicest hotel. Thx.

Holiday Inn? Presidente?

Heck, put them in Sleep Inn next to the belly of the beast!

P.S. If Amon location isn't a must, my recommendation would be the Hilton Gardens or Tryp in Sabana.

Although I hate to refer any business to them, perhaps The Dunn Inn

I agree. The Barcelo San Jose Palacio has resort facilities and isn't very expensive.

Very nice place with nice rooms, onsite sushi restaurant and bar/lounge, and an excellent buffet breakfast.

Just don't jump in one of the pools, you'll freeze to death

In Amon definitely the Don Carlos. It's a very clean older boutique hotel with very nice employees throughout. Family owned. Many of the staff speak English and make you feel very welcomed. Lots of families and couples as well as tour groups stay there. They have a nice little tour office to book day trips etc. Also a nice souvenir shop and a restaurant. The restaurant has decent enough food and is very nice looks wise. Since its right in the heart of Amon it's close to everything and of course use taxi at night and they are easy to get there. It's what Costa Rica was like before. If you want them to get a real feeling of Costa Rica then this is the place. I had family stay there a couple times years ago while I stayed at the old Castillo.

I agree with Hoosier, never stayed but had lunch there, very quaint small hotel but definitely not chica friendly. I used to pirate the desktops there for emails, nobody hassled me, so I have warm feelings for the place.

has anyone stayed at Hotel Balmoral on Ave Central lately. It always seems like a decent non monger hotel that was close to the action with a decent on site dining and many places in walking distance.

I usually spend 30 minutes in the pool every day. You got to walk in very slowly and get used to it. I find it makes me feel refreshed when I get out. I think it helps you circulation

I stayed in the Balmoral during my last visit (Dec 26 to Jan 8, 2019). I stayed in their Deluxe Plus (King) room. Great room with a lot of light, a refrigerator and microwave and very comfortable bed. Breakfast was the same everyday, but they had a fruit bowl (papaya, water melon and pineapple) which saved the day for me everyday. Room service was great. Front-desk was not great, but OK, no complaints though. I say OK because even though they allow patrons to take chicas with them, its almost like they did not like it. But their policy is clear that you can take a chica with you anytime, as long as you pay $22 ($20 + 13% tax) each time. You can check-in 1 chica per stay and she can go with you any number of times without you having to pay the $22 and she can also eat the free breakfast with you if you wish. I had no issues bringing 1 chica a day, but boy at the end of my trip that alone costed me about $200.

The best thing about this Hotel is obviously the location - its not just the fact that it's right on Avenida Central, i can go grab a bite anytime of the day or people watch either downstairs or right from my room balcony, but its also just 1.5 blocks from Del f**ing Rey haha. So I loved the convenience. But for my next trip, I am not going to stay there because of the high Chica fee and also a bit more expensive room rent.

Hope this information helps.
