The ticket prices from Newark/New York area for the next 3 weeks are out of control. Everything around $750. In the past I have seen the prices drop a week before the flight.
I'm planning to travel from Newark to San Jose in the first 3 weeks of April. Should I buy now or wait it out and see if the prices will drop. I know it's a gamble but perhaps taking.

Go to a travel site like Kyak.com, many have predictions of what tickets cost at different times of the year. You may get some idea there.

Do any of the airlines offer flight change or fare credit benefits like SWA does?

I can imagine demand is so high since people want get the phuck out of cold weather this time of year in the north central and north east of the U.S. In north and central Texas have had 4 strong freezing cold spells this winter, the current one the most severe but still not as bad as 2021.

I am in Monterrey (MTY), MEX right now and although not freezing the 40 degree daytime highs and mid 30s at night are not real enjoyable when is usually warmer. I was booked for TJ/San Diego this time frame and the forecast then was colder than MTY but changed and really nice out there. Oh well I can book future winter trips further down into MEX or C.R. if prices good.

Couple weeks ago I checked C.R. for late May and around that $700 price direct from Houston Hobby.

I can do Colombia also since decent Spanish and I stay away from "dating" at night and social apps. but is expensive to get there also.

I'm not sure about Newark but I checked the rates from JFK and they didn't peak past 450 even in April. Check google flights
