Except the plan is a poison pill. It will regularize Uber, at such a high cost (fees and taxes in all directions) that it will kill it. Never underestimate the capability of bankrupt socialist statists to crush free enterprise in their quest to tax their subjects into starvation to preserve their failed system. |

Digging deeper into this, we have found that many government officials own taxi cabs and rent them out on a daily basis to the drivers. This is why there is so much resistance to UBER. I have always compared this situation to where the government outlaws cellphones and requires everyone to continue using payphones (because the government officials own the pay phones) Uber; with better technology, better service, pre-set prices, and accountability is competing against the taxis with poor service, no accountability, unknown pricing/rigged meters, etc... There is a new app; showing an estimated fare, locations, and a complaint 'hot line" that taxis can sign up for, that will try and compete with Uber. Meanwhile, many thousands of UBER drivers in CR are contributing to the economy, working an honest job, helping their families, paying the gasoline prices and taxes, and providing a benefit to the society as a whole. But sometimes logic is different in CR |

To add to Rico's post... Taxi licenses are supposed to be for individual drivers. In reality there are rich people (oligarchs or members of the rich families that rule Costa Rica for their own benefit - or as Rico calls them "politicians") that own these fleets of poorly maintained taxis and hire the drivers. Drivers who (generally) don't give a shit and take advantage to pad their income through rip-offs (non-metered fares, etc.). All of this is legally protected through a web of laws so that these oligarchs have a dependable cash racket. That's how Costa Rica works. The rules tilt everything towards about 20-30 families whose members fill the courts, the legislature, and the ministries.* Then came Uber. Uber doesn't fill the oligarchs' pockets. Uber enpowers anyone with a decent car. Uber must be crushed. *Witness the last presidental election in CR. The PAC government of Solis manipulated the election by creating the "SQUIRREL!" issue of the IACHR ruling on gay marriage to ensure the victory of PAC candidate Alvarado. While Solis himself was not an oligarch by birth, everything was manipulated to preserve the status quo. The threat to the status quo was Juan Castro - he had to be eliminated politically. Can't have the people voting differently than their masters' order. |

I'm waiting for Versatile to chime in about how honest taxis are and how no one has ever been ripped off by a taxista in the CR & how honest his BIL is and how evil UBER & Uber users are! CostaReeker |

Bottom line is that Uber is cheaper and efficient. Used them now for 3 years in CR and never had a problem. Saves a ton if you’re going to the airport. |

I sure hope this doesn't make Uber drastically more expensive. Uber is one of the few cheap things in Costa Rica. I hate the red taxis in Costa Rica. The drivers are a bunch of conmen. |
