Post subject:  Best Cheap Hotel?

I am coming back to CR for a crown replacement (Dr Chen) and then off to Puerto Viejo.
I used to stay at the Nuevo Johnson (now closed)
Are there any cheap hotels in the area anymore?
Hotel la Fortuna Rojas Dafu is close to the Del Rey and is pretty cheap, Any reviews?
My friend is coming for crowns (dr chen) and implants at Costaricaimplants.com
He will need a room for at least a week and I know money is rather tight for him as well.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Foos

If you're staying for a week or more, best bang for the colones is Vista Linda apartments in Calle Blanco, about 10 minutes north of downtown. Last time I checked, he charges like $125 to $150 per week, (Carlos the owner) totally furnished apartment, full kitchen with utensils, dishes, etc., in a gringo compound with high security fence and safe working class tico neighborhood.

Uber to Holiday Inn area about $1500, taxis are more, bus stop about 100 feet from the front gate gets you downtown for about 300 to 400 colones, comes and goes every 15 minutes, nice cheap restaurants and little convenience stores nearby as well.

When I came to retire here I stayed a couple months before finding my full time apartment, but other guys I know have lived there for years, a friendly fun place filled with expats, maid service included, she also does laundry, and even has somewhat hot water, lol.

Hotel Sonador in el centro charges 100$ per week. Decent but nothing special.
Fast internet. Close to automercado. Or 10 mil a night

Thanks.
We are trying to get a hold of Vistalinda apartments as that would be perfect, but so far they are not answering their phone or responding to email.

Hotel Sonador: cant find any way to check if rooms are available.

Thanks guys, looking forward to CR, i haven't been back since 2016.

Carlos is the owner and he usually answers the phone in the mornings, when you deal with Costa Rica, lots of businesses, even large businesses, operate willy nilly, it can be irritating for N Americans. :? :!:

We're used to professionals answering their phones and returning their calls, but here it's "Puda Vida" which translates to "we work when we feel like it"...that's why this place is and always will be a third world country.. :x .

He usually isn't there on weekends but you can try in the morning, sometimes he's available, he's often there working on the property, but forget Sunday...

Keep trying, he answers eventually, lol. I'm assuming you're calling 506.2240.5021

Try 8:00 AM to 12:00 noon our time (Central time) Mon thru Friday, (the earlier the better) that's when he's usually up and about and working on the property, he's always tinkering with things.

I personally repaired and reset the outdoor gym when I was there as I'm a gym rat, it was in disrepair and rusting, don't know if they kept it up after I left in March.

It's really a great short term place and some guys have been there years. Lots of little convenience stores, butcher shops, Tico style restaurants, about 6 blocks is a fried chicken and Pizza place, just a few blocks a couple Tico sodas and Chinese places very good at unheard of prices.

I moved because I wanted a larger 2 bed /2 bath, more modern place in Barrio Amon, I got lucky and found a "penthouse" in a building on the 6th floor with killer views, cool breezes, American style hot water, real cable high speed internet and washer/dryer, about 1/3 the cost of what a similar place would cost in South Florida where I'm from.

It's perfect for me as I walk everywhere, all shopping within blocks of my place. HDR, SL, etc. I can get to in 10 minutes, and that's walking a gingerly pace, lol. I rarely use uber or a cab anymore, maybe if I have to go to Escazu, that's about it. I even walk to Sabana, good exercise.

Is Dr Chen still practicing? He did my dental work about 10 years ago and I need to get some things done. He was awesome and very reasonable.

Yes, Dr Chen is still practicing and he now has a young cute female dentist, she did my crown replacement and I would recommend her.
My friend had Dr Chen do his crown and and he was happy with his work and you certainly can't complain about the prices.

Does anyone know if the Hotel Sonador is still open? I tried to call 011 506 2222 1747 but I keep getting disconnected.
