You have been a member since August 2004. Please tell us that question is a joke. |

It's around 17%. One advantage to getting a room in a place that doesn't charge by the night is that the taxes are different. |

Not sure I understand that. The tax is 13% sales tax and 3.39% room tax. Any hotel that rents a room is suppose to collect the full 16.39%, it doesn't make any difference if the room is rented for an hour, 12 hours, a night, a week or a month. Would appreciate any further info you have that I missed. Thanks. |

It’s a 3% Tourism Board tax, and a 13% sales, but it’s calculates “tax on taxâ€, so say you have a $49 + tax rate, that means you first add the 3% ($49 + 3% = $50.47), and THEN apply the 13% to the total ($50.47 + 13% = $57,03) It’s the same to say that taxes are 16,39%. The 0,39% effect of applying one tax to the other, as in 13% of 3% is 0.13*0.03= 0.0039 or 0.39% So 0.39% + 3% + 13% = 16,39% True story! |

Fromsjo, Thanks for the clarification but what I was really interested in was the post that said, Quote: One advantage to getting a room in a place that doesn't charge by the night is that the taxes are different
I have never heard of that and was wondering if it is correct and what the parameters are. |

If a place is called an apartment and doesn't rent for less than a month, or maybe week, I don't think it needs to charge the hotel tax. That is what I was told almost 10 years ago when I stayed at Scotland Apartments for a month while taking Spanish classes around the corner. I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time. |

Veelee, Thanks for the clarification. Sure an apartment falls under a totally different category but most will not rent by the night. Apartment Scotland advertises weekly & monthly rates if they offer one night it is not mentioned. There advertised weekly rate is FROM $250.00 ($35.75 per day), thats includes a full kitchen but does not mention daily maid service or free breakfast. Think a guy here for a weeks vacations would prefer to pay the hotel tax and get the fringe benefits. |
