I decided to drop into San José for a few nights on my way back from Cahuita to Coco where I live. I emailed the Taormina the ususal... retired.. CR resident... CRT VIP.... not that it would matter but just in case. I've never paid more than $77 incl tax (Sept or so) and as little as $53 not very long ago. They emailed back and said the price was $90. Just for drills I checked Booking.com and they offered rooms for $77 incl tax which I booked. Then, I got another email from Taormina about the Booking.com reservation saying the rate was really $90 (not the $77 of my "confirmed" Booking.com reservation). To which I responded that they had been a great deal in the past but now it was time to look elsewhere. To which they then offered 10% off... $81.
No thanks. In fact, I decided to skip San José all together, to save about $600 and go straight back to Coco even though it sucks for chicas. It just keeps getting worse... high prices and comparatively crappy P4P in SJO.
In any case, in the future I'll stay at the frickin' Morazán if I have to before I'll go back to the Taormina. Should have done that anyway once they fired Guy Grand.
Too bad. That was a great deal with a nice
environment. But, if I'm gonna pay those kind of rates I'd rather give it to the Sportsman's or the Amistad and be at the top of the hill rather than at the bottom.
Then again, maybe I'll just go to Nicaragua where the PPI is still good (pu*sy Price Index).

Guy Grand passed away quite some time ago. R.I.P. old friend.

You should have tried Hotel Little Havana.
Very reasonable rates - about $60, but cash only.

On the ground report....Was at Taormina tonight for casino action and a BS Poker Tourney. 8mil buy in. As usual, no one at Taormina really wants Gringos around. Hotel employees included. Nice facilities but not Gringo Monger friendly. F them!

I found the opposite to be true in the bar @ the Taormina last week. The bartenders treated me great & I enjoyed talking & joking with them. Both nights, around 7pm, there were 3-4 chicas hanging around looking for company who were also treated well by the bar staff. I'll go back on my next trip & also stop in the restaurant for a pizza or something.

I've stayed at the Taormina (gringo-owned, I believe) on four occasions over the last year and never even remotely sensed an anti-gringo sentiment from any of their staff, and I'm a dedicated gringo monger who frequently had lady friends come visit me there. Can't say I've ever spent any time in their casino, and I'm not a fan of low buy-in Hold'em tournaments.

I'm a light sleeper who sometimes enjoys sleeping in after a late night out, and I'm a big fan of their QUIET, 4th-floor back-facing rooms.
