I usually stay at La Gran Via--but they have a sister hotel called San Agustin on Calle 6 and Ave. Central--ANYONE STAYED THERE? Can some fellow brother who is in San Jose check it out for me? |

Rider, Use to stay at the Gran Via before I moved here so can get a comparison between them. Will try to check out San Agustin next time am in that area, unfortunately do not know when that will be. |

Is La Gran Via chica friendly? I have searched the posts and did not find much information about this hotel. I am forced to change my travel dates at the last minute and need to start looking for lodging. My original choice is booked. My first visit and I find out I chose the week that SJ shuts down. Thanks to this board at least I found out prior to arrival. |

Very chica friendly...they just hold their ID, and don't even bat an eye.... |

Be careful at night. You are getting into a neighborhood that the tourist books always warn people about. You are close to the Mercado Central, which could be fun, but a wingman wouldn't hurt. I feel more comfortable a few blocks east of there, and less comfortable a few blocks west. I don't know if it makes sense, but I felt OK going to BBC years ago on foot in the daytime, but wouldn't want to walk to Krysis, even though they were close. There was something visual about the street between them that put me uptight. |

That neighborhood is definitely not a place to walk by yourself after dark. That calle is on the west side of the Banco de Costa Rica, on the east side is the Royal Dutch. A few years ago a gringo got mugged while the security guard at BCR saw what was happening and did not lift a finger to help. |
