I'm coming to San Jose in first week of March. I have booked a Standard room at Hotel Taormina on the 3rd floor. I was informed it has not had an a/c put in there yet. Does it get very warm in the room with just the paddle fans and is it to noisy with the window open?

I open the windows. It gets warm whilst phucking. Otherwise, it's fine.

You don't need the a/c.

Depends on your tolerance for heat. SJO ain't Jaco, but it can get pretty warm sometimes.

I always stay in a premium room on the 4th floor, as I'd rather have A/C and not need it than want A/C and not have it.

Traffic noise isn't that much of a problem unless your room faces Avenida 11. Night or weekends not even then.

By the way, the 3rd floor rooms haven't been remodeled yet (unlike the 4th floor rooms).

You'd have to ask the hotel what the current status of the 2nd and 3rd floor is. They didn't plan to renovate it like the 4th floor (the 'decorator" was one of the owners' girlfriend an she spent $1&K per room). The 2nd and 3rd floor are being done in-house.

It will never be "the new Del Rey" because it doesn't have the huge bar area.

The 4th floor rooms beat the Del Rey hands down.

It's a very nice (4th floor), chic friendly, no chica fee hotel.

The Del Rey has a chica fee...

The casino is smallish. Some chicas do hang out there (a few). It is a good choice. Value for money the 4th floor rooms are awesome.

You should also consider the Castillo (awesome, no casino, no hanging out chicas, same ownership as LA, same chica policy).

Recommended......less hustle and bustle. Nice bar and area to hang around. Clean, open front door for ventilation. Stayed in the cheaper rooms and never had a problem. IMHO a/c is not needed. Open the window.

Since the Taormina Hotel and Casino has just blocked off all the 3rd floor rooms for the next phase of renovations, you will be automatically upgraded to a newly renovated Premium Room with a brand new central air conditioning system at no extra charge.

The second and fourth floor rooms are completely renovated and the 3rd floor rooms are currently undergoing renovations. As of a couple of months ago, the central air conditioning also works now throughout the entire property.

You're just a block north of Zona II and the new Little Havana, and right across the street from Dunn Inn, which has decent food. It's maybe a minute or two farther from the HDR than the SL. I don't get downtown too often, but I did get a chance to drop by Taormina a couple of weeks ago. Very impressed with what they've done on the ground floor. Not too many people -- maybe 4 or 5 girls hanging out at the bar and maybe 7 customers in the casino. All personnel were very friendly. I even took about $500 from their blackjack table, which I'm sure I'll give back on my next visit. It looked like the restaurant was open but I didn't try it. At any rate, there are plenty of nearby options for food -- all within walking distance or a 1K taxi ride.

The only thing I don't like about Taormina is that it's at just about the lowest point of the Gulch, which means practically everywhere is an uphill walk. Of course, that means that coming "home" is always a downhill walk. I'd probably take a taxi to everywhere (except Zona and HLH, because they're so close), and walk back unless it's late at night.
