I want to treat myself to the pussy-immersive, 24-7 experience that is the HDL by staying there for 1 night on my next trip so I can "check that box." (I'm already booked for SL, but will take a quick afternoon walk to HDL for a night.) Questions: -What's the best area/rooms in HDL for a lifelong non-smoker? -Is it best to book in advance? If so, are there any online booking sites that don't require advance payment or hold credit card preauthorization as does booking.com? Or should I just walk in and negotiate when I get there? Thanks as always for the intel. DB |

Smoking has been prohibited indoors in Costa Rica since 2012 (IIRC). |

The DR has been sold out at strange times in my experience, for example I tried booking in the middle of July but the place was packed because of a bachelor party. You'll likely be able to get a room so long as it isn't around halloween, but the place DOES book out. |

I am a HDR expert, been staying there since 2005, I just call them direct and book the room. They have internal rooms that are claustrophobic, no windows. Ask for a window room on the 3rd floor or higher, 2nd floor can be noisy. I have never smelled the remnants of cigarettes in any room I have stayed at, but their service is really good, when the porter takes you to your room and you think you smell the remnants of smoke they will offer you a different one if they are not totally booked. One time I booked a room and the a/c on the floor above me dripped on my a/c, it wasn't loud but it drove me nuts, they gave me a new room immediately no hassle. |

Thanks, brothers. Greatly appreciate the reponses MM3 wrote: Smoking has been prohibited indoors in Costa Rica since 2012 (IIRC). MM3, glad to hear that. I'm super-sensitive to cigarette smoke (not cigars or weed) ![]() Netgems wrote: I am a HDR expert, been staying there since 2005, I just call them direct and book the room. What's the typical room rate (or range) for a single room with a window, queen bed, 3rd floor or higher? DB |

Thanks as always for the intel. DB I booked the SL on their website and they only required half of a night as a deposit (like 40 bucks) and I can pay the rest when I get there. I seriously don't know a cheaper way to book a hotel room. If you staying there or planning on coming back I suggest you get the VIP CRT card, it will save you 10% eveywhere we monger. Oh and I strongly recommend that you reserve a room asap since they go quick. |

Hey Poo ![]() I was hoping the HDL had a similar booking-with a-small-deposit system as does SL (thanks, Bill!) ![]() I'll take Netgems' advice, call HDL, and go from there. DB |

Hotel Del Lay? It's appropriate, but it's the HDR (Hotel Del Rey). I kept scratching my head - the "L" and the "R" aren't close on the keyboard. |

If you call for a reservation do it fairly early in the morning before the lobby area gets to loud. All the background noise makes it hard to communicate dates and CC numbers to the front desk clerks who's English skills are marginal. I haven't stayed at HDR since about 5 years ago and I do miss it. Moved on to more laid back places, SL, LA, Taormina. Used to stay at HDR so often that I got on their "Frequent Stayer List". They would email me special rates and promotions. I wonder if they still have those email discounts? The lowest rate I got was $34/nt. I preferred the off street rooms 4th floor and above. The street rooms are noisy all night with the cabs honking and the guy with the stick and box singing Bob Marley and the Banana song all night long. Special things can happen at the rey and you just have to be there for a few days to catch that wave when it comes. That's why I recommend staying at HDR for a few days, at least once. -LG Sent from my KIW-L24 using Tapatalk |
