Post subject: | La Amistad? |
I'm looking to book La Amistad for three nights and two nights in Nov. with maybe 9 nights in Jaco at the Cocal booked in between the two San Jose stays. I usually stay at the Sportsmen's and will probably still party there. However, I thought I'd try the La Amistad this time. The free food and drinks is tempting me. I am relatively sensitive to noise although I can wear was earplugs which keeps most of the noise out generally. Can anyone suggest rooms (either types of rooms or the actual numbers) which would mitigate the train noise that I keep reading about? If it's too noisy, I'll just book the Sportsmens, but I'd like to try the Amistad. Oh, and I don't probably need a Penthouse necessarily, but still I'd like a decent to nice room. Oh, and are the Studios the same as the Suites as when I go to their website I don't see the "Suite" per se, but just studios. Thanks, guys. Hope to see you in Nov in SJ and/or Jaco! |

I usually stay in one of the penthouses...u can definitely hear the train in the morning, not that bad though. Last trip, I had to move rooms for my last 2 nights, to an interior room...no outside Windows, which kinda sucked, but no noise at all! |

I do have wax earplugs. Hmmm...maybe I should just stay at the Sportsmens. |

I'll be checking out La Amistad for the first time next weekend. I'll be staying in one of the penthouses as well. Just out of curiosity, just how much/long/often is this train noise an issue? |

Thanks for such a quick reply. I remember seeing your pictures, but I didn't know where to look for them. |

In room 201 you can really hear the train, since the room parallels the tracks. But I like the room so I put up with the noise for a couple of hours. Room 202 runs perpendicular to the tracks and so the noise is not as bad. |

I guess the trick is to call them for a particular room # since there are no room numbers on the web site, etc..just types... |

When you fill out your reservation request there is a place to put comments or requests. |

They now don't blow the horn in the earliest parts of the day, they have a guy or two that stop traffic so the train doesn't blow the horn. Cant recall what time they do this until, but no more 5 am horn blasts. The train rolling through wasnt bad in room 203, but it is directly above the kitchen and the interior window opens up to the breakfast line and morning chatter. Earplugs take care of all these issues though. |

I want to start by saying that La Amistad is where I've stayed the most in San Jose and I really like the place. Here's my two cents about LA. First, the all-inclusive is the best deal in San Jose. Secondly, their chica policy is awesome. Third. the ambiance at the bar and with the other guests is great. Fourth, the train noise is over blown. If it wakes you up in the morning, roll over and go back to sleep (if you can on those sheets). Fifth, their AC situation sucks overall, but that's what you get when you retrofit an old building. Window units in interior rooms. Rooms where there's an AC but it just makes noise. Weird bathrooms with no place to even put a toothbrush by the sink. I am a bit amused that people reject Hotel Taormina out of hand because of their AC issue when the truth is that La Amistad has some issues in that regard too. Especially since, to be honest, you really don't need AC in the Central Valley if you can open windows (which you can't in some rooms in the LA). And I live in the Southeast US, in a hot and humid place, where I run the AC almost 8 months a year. And work in the northeastern jungle of Costa Rica where it is 90 degrees (+) and 90% (+) humidity every day. |
